He has to sign an ELC regardless if he makes it to UFA or not.
Sabres have his rights until August 15.

But then after the ELC is done he would be an RFA instead of UFA right?
I just don't see the upside either way for Vessey to sign.

No he will still be RFA either way.
If he was worried about contracts and getting to a big deal earlier, he should have just signed with Nashville.
