Flames do not qualify RFAs Chiasson, Culkin, and Morrison. Do qualify Wotherspoon
News Updatehttps://www.nhl.com/flames/news/flames-tender-qualifying-offers-to-nine-players/c-290167472
Quote:
The Calgary Flames announced today that the following nine players have received qualifying offers from the club:
Sam Bennett (C)
Micheal Ferland (RW)
Jon Gillies (G)
Garnet Hathaway (RW)
Brett Kulak (D)
Curtis Lazar (C)
David Rittich (G)
Linden Vey (C)
Tyler Wotherspoon (D)
The following players did not receive qualifying offers:
Alex Chiasson (RW)
Ryan Culkin (D)
Kenney Morrison (D)
|
Darren Haynes @DarrenWHaynes
Brad Treliving confirms pending RFA Alex Chiasson was not qualified. Sounded concerned about his arb rights - similar to Colborne last year.
means he will be UFA on July 1st, unless he comes to terms with the Flames before then
Darren Haynes @DarrenWHaynes
The other two Flames not qualified were defencemen Ryan Culkin and Kenney Morrison. Tyler Wotherspoon did receive a qualifying offer.
sounds like everyone else was qualified including Bennett, Ferland, Lazar, Rittich, Vey, Hathaway, Gillies, and Kulak.

Maybe we still sign him. Doesn't mean we can't negotiate.

I never had a problem with Chiasson in the bottom six - I'd even say I liked him in that role. That being said, I think our bottom six right wingers are going to be Lazar and Brouwer, so I'm not sure where Alex would have fit in.
Spoon being qualified definitely seems a bit surprising, but that's cool.

Tough to fit Chiasson in, especially if we sign someone on July 1.
Not surprised with the other guys who weren't qualified.

A little surprising about Chiasson, but when you think about it not overly surprising I suppose.
Culkin and Morrison were a given, some might be surprised Wotherspoon was QO'ed but I'm not. Very good AHL Dman at the least, where as Culkin and Morrison even struggled down there.

Chiasson was a decent fit here but ultimately replaceable. I'd expect Versteeg to be definitely back now.

Too bad, I liked Chiasson a lot more than Brouwer.

Wouldn't bet on it. Hathaway's spot to lose IMO.

Glad Chiasson was cut loose. Not a terrible player (when deployed correctly) just rather give that spot to a younger guy

I think it was the right move. Not just from an arbitration perspective but from a"Flames need more offense, and offense dies on Chiasson's stick" perspective. Chiasson is a great fourth liner, but it looks like Brouwer will be occupying that 4RW spot for the next three years. I imagine they'd rather have a natural LW or C occupy the 4LW spot.

Interesting that Vey apparently received a QO despite already signing in Europe for next year. I guess this holds his rights if he decides to come back in a year and doesn't really cost anything.
Not surprising about Culkin and Morrison. Sucks that Culkin probably would have been called up if he hadn't been injured two years ago.
Kind of surprising about Spoon, but I think he still has value.

Based on what is coming from the media, Treliving wants Chiasson back. He just doesn't want to deal with arbitration.

very good management from Treliving.
He likes Chiasson, likely wants him back, but refuses to get saddled to a bad arbitration result if he doesn't like it. Too risky for replacement level players.
Chiasson will be back.

Fair enough, still, can't complain about Chiasson's body of work in Calgary.

Wotherspoon quietly put together a good season in Stockton, going from what front office and coaches have said. Perhaps he's in the mix for a full-time NHL spot. One of he, Andersson or Kulak.

Hopefully Wotherspoon and Kulak can both outplay Bartkowski next year. Push him right down to the Heat, while they battle for the 3rd pair left hand D spot.

I'm hoping it's two of plus a veteran add (Stone if he comes down on wants, or another)
