So I'm going to continue to play devils advocate given there are very few studies on vaping and no long term studies.

Here is a recent study from the New England Journal of Medicine (a well respected journal...not like most of what has been published on both sides of the debate at this point...though science shouldn't have sides). Now obviously things at this stage in the scientific community are still very much in their infancy but for those thinking about picking up the habit "just because" may want the information.

http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc1413069

Quote:
Inhaled formaldehyde has a reported slope factor of 0.021 kg of body weight per milligram of formaldehyde per day for cancer (http://oehha.ca.gov/risk/pdf/TCDBcas061809.pdf). Among persons with a body weight of 70 kg, the incremental lifetime cancer risk associated with long-term cigarette smoking at 1 pack per day may then be estimated at 9×10−4. If we assume that inhaling formaldehyde-releasing agents carries the same risk per unit of formaldehyde as the risk associated with inhaling gaseous formaldehyde, then long-term vaping is associated with an incremental lifetime cancer risk of 4.2×10−3. This risk is 5 times as high (as compared with the risk based on the calculation of Miyake and Shibamoto shown in Figure 1), or even 15 times as high (as compared with the risk based on the calculation of Counts et al. shown in Figure 1) as the risk associated with long-term smoking. In addition, formaldehyde-releasing agents may deposit more efficiently in the respiratory tract than gaseous formaldehyde, and so they could carry a higher slope factor for cancer.

My opinion hasn't much changed...if it helps you quit smoking then great! But I certainly wouldn't pick up a habit I don't currently have. Again my opinion.

I use Vapur. No nicotine and comes in disposable or rechargable. Sheffield and sons has the rechargable kit for 13 bucks. Charges through USB and refils are 5 for 10 bucks. Macs et all. have the disposable variety. Its either 1 king size for 10 bucks (500 puffs) or two disposable small size (about 300 puffs each and feels remarkibly like a cig and has soft tips) for 10 bucks. I think they even have a 20 pack but never bought it.

I'm waiting on the lemo 2 personally. Cost effective and easy filling supposedly for an rta. I use vg based juices and avoid pg so it's nice to have devices that can handle thicker liquids. I can always thing things out with water but would prefer not to!

Exploding vaporizer rips hole in man's tongue

Kenneth Barbero of Albany, NY was enjoying a nice millennial vaping session when the hand-held device he was using blew up in his face; knocking out teeth, ripping a hole in his tongue and leaving his hands covered in burns.

Barbero's mother told WTEN she thinks the vaporizer's battery exploded. "The battery had exploded inside and everything shot out...went into his mouth and burned everything," she said.

Although I know little about the long-term effects, vaping has been really great for my health vis-a-vis my pack-a-day habit of fifteen+ years. No more smoker's cough, I can run, play floor hockey, hike now with ease.

I have been dropping the nicotine levels slowly but surely, so I'm really happy overall with vaping.

I was actually warned when I bought mine that if you use the wrong voltage battery or even mess with the settings and pieces too much, that this sort of thing was likely to happen.

Scary stuff. I have no idea how these devices don't have some sort of fail safe to keep it from happening but if you research them you'll see that it is actually quite common.

Yes unfortunately the culture of ecigs nowadays is to use 'unregulated' batteries or mods, that don't even check the resistance of your atomizer or vaping apparatus. I really don't understand it, because regulated devices are at times cheaper than the unregulated devices, but have built in safety checks including ohm resistance and automatic battery cut-off / shutdown (e.g. it won't let you press the vape button for more than ten seconds).

Despite all of the accidents some purists still like unregulated battery mods. I won't go near them.. I build my own coils but know that if I drop the device or if my wire burns off, it could cause a short without my knowledge. If you're using an unregulated device it won't give you any warning.. the second you press the fire button you could be dealing with a wattage level that is way over the recommended and cause these types of incidents. Regulated batteries do constant resistance checks to ensure it doesn't churn out an unsafe wattage and cause battery venting.

Video in article. Pretty graphic picture too.

http://calgaryherald.com/news/local-...-in-his-pocket

“All of a sudden, there was an explosion,” Rex said. “I literally thought someone had thrown a Molotov cocktail at us.”

The couple was standing outside on the steps of the restaurant, chatting with their server who had escorted them outside after dinner. Johnson said he didn’t even have an e-cigarette on him — it was later discovered a loose e-cigarette battery reacted with some change in his pants pocket, triggering a small explosion.

“I describe it as a flare going off in my pocket,” Johnson said. “It was excruciating pain. When the paramedics got there, I was pale and doing whatever I could not to pass out.”

Spoiler!

That is some extreme vaping.

I don't know why, but when I am sitting in traffic and look over and see someone vaping and there is a big shroud of vapour, I can't help but think how dumb it looks

This is a weird one - apparently it was a battery for his e-cig that blew up, which he had stored in his pocket with loose change. So the positive and negative poles were exposed.

Most likely it was an 18650 battery that are used in ecigs and flashlights, etc.. not the best storage procedure there!

It looks dumb, sure. But I am more than a year off cigs because of it.

Damn, I'm friends with that guy who got burned. One day down the road I'll be able to make fun of him for that video. But today is not that day.

What kind of vape was he using? Was it one of the mod ones or over driven low ohm ones?

He just had a spare battery in his pocket, which comes with warnings to always store properly. They are powerful batteries and having both ends touch metal without regulation will cause them to explode.

Not sure, I haven't talked to him in a while. But from I read it was just the battery that was in his pocket, it wasn't actually in the unit itself.
