Bad Contracts
All the trade talk and signing talk has had me checking out capgeek numerours times a day. There are some AWFUL contratcs out there.
What player do you think has the worst contract out there based on age, $$$, term etc... Luongo? Erhoff? and What team has the best contract situation currently and/ or going forward?

A little off topic but if the Flames do decide to sell of some of our high priced talent I would not be opposed to taking back a bad contract (with a 2 year or shorter term remaining) in a deal if the other team sweetens the pot.
Toronto has been successful at this and acquired Franson and Gardiner by doing so. Plus you never know if the "bad contract" bounces back ala Lupul in Toronto.

Ville Leino ($4.5) and Tyler Myers ($5.5 till 2019!!!) have to be up there as two of the worst.

I would have said Leino before he came back... but right now he has 3 points in 3 games, so maybe he will get back to form. I never would expect him to be a point a game player, but 4.5 mill @ something like 5 or 6 years is gross for a player who had one decent NHL season.
I've always thought Hartnell was over paid too.

Bad contracts first team all stars
C- Lecavalier, 7 yrs left @ 7.7
LW-Ville Lieno, 4yrs @ 4.5
RW-Ovechkin, 8yrs @ 9.5
D-Erhoff, 8yrs @ 4.0
D-Brent Burns 5 @ 5.75
G- 7ungo, 9@ 5.33
hm, Brad Richards
I believe Boston is in the best situation going forward, a good mix of experience and age, with good playes under good contratcs that expire at different times.

A guy like Myers can easily rebound.

I won't say Ehrhoff's and Luongo's contracts are bad just yet. These guys, especially Ehrhoff, have been worth their cap hit since they have signed their contracts. The problem is the length of the contract, which cannot be described as bad until these players begin seriously underperforming their contracts. Right now, Ehrhoff has been money for the Sabres as far as I know and Luongo is still a very desirable #1 goalie, at least in the regular season.

Yeah I have a feeling that Myers might rebound if he gets a new team...honestly I wouldn't mind that one as much as the others.

Luongo is a top ten goalie in the league just because the Canucks are misusing him doesn't make his deal close to one of the worst.
Dipietro easily takes the worst contract for a goalie.

Dipietro
Yashin's cap hit
Weber
Ovechkin
Luongo
Pronger
Lecavalier
Richards
Plus all of those 10+ year contracts were ######ed. Even for elite players like Luongo, Weber and Zetterberg they will become albatross' contracts at some point. As much as some people like to make fun of the Flames for some of their contracts, I believe Kipper's 6 year contract was the longest one on the team. But I've always been of the opinion that all of those 10+ year contracts were just stupid and will never be lived up to by anyone.

I feel Myers has the potential to get back into form. A substantial drop off seems fairly normal among players in his age bracket.
If he is available, I think he should be a target. Honestly he cannot be any worse then Sarich, Smith, Babchuk and even Gio at times...

I think Crosby will live up to his and as much as I think he was overrated at the time with his status in Washington I could have seen Oveckhin living up to his.
But both these deals for me are about these guys brining in fans and merchandise sales as it does with on ice performance.

Some of the worst contracts should be obvious since the player cannot even stay in the NHL at their salary. IE:
Olesz
Komisarek
Connolly
Some prior ones were obviously Redden and Gomez
I'd agree on Ovechkin and Leino probably.
Some of the ones people are mentioning are nowhere near the worst. Erhoff's will only be bad if he declines significantly. Burns doesn't seem that horrible.

One good thing the Flames have going for them is that most of their big contracts are up in the next year or two and they should have a lot of room to manoeuvre although that simply means they will have the opportunity to overpay a lot of UFA's which is how these lists get made in the first place.

I think the Flames will be in excellent shape in the upcoming years to take advantage of a bad contract. Get a solid pick or prospect back in exchange for taking one of them. Include me on the "Tyler Myers can bounce back" bandwagon - you may not get something good for acquiring that contract, but it wouldn't be an outrageous thought that his acquisition cost is pretty low.
Those long term contracts are scary. As much as I hate saying it, Luongo's contract isn't horrible, but there is a good chance it could become one in time.
I think DiPietro and Lecalvalier's are the worst current. Way too many years, and one is not even an NHL player any longer. Lecalvalier seems to have slowed down considerably (perhaps ever since the Matt Cooke incident) and I don't ever see him living up to his contract any longer, and it is only going to get worse.
