Sounds horrible to attend, but whoever thought of it.......genius?

They even have some corporate sponsorship (Nordstrom, Telus, and RBC). Genius indeed.

There is a CTV interview from around a week ago with the local host and he mentioned that there is a wait list of about 7,500 people in Calgary and the event hosted 3,000 people. For an earlier Vancouver event there was 30,000 people on the wait list.

This is certainly not an event that gets me excited.

You know what would be awesome? If we had an event where everyone wore red, got together somewhere, drank beer and ate junkfood. Maybe there could be some entertainment, like a sporting event or something, with the athletes wearing red too! I think if you did that, people would pay to go to it all winter long. Of course, then you'd need to build some sort of indoor facility for it, but you could probably charge tickets for it and even charge higher prices for the beer and junkfood. If it worked, you could franchise it for different cities, with each city dressing in different colours. Anyone else think I'm on to something here?

It would be even better if said event banned anyone not wearing red from entry.

Everyone is new money so the white after Labour Day doesn't apply.

Diner en Blanc has become very popular here in Vancouver.
Personally I find the entire concept ridiculous and catered to the most pretentious people in our society.
An invite only event, with no cause and you have to bring everything yourself. A bunch of people "who got in" bragging about it on Facebook etc. just so they can feel smug over the 30,000 people who didn't.

I blame Puff Daddy for this trend.

Let's expand on this idea to include drones dropping colour bombs from up above.

They'll never know what hit 'em.

My wife and I went both last year and this year to the Calgary event. It's called diner en blanc and started in Paris 25+ years ago and is now done in cities all over the world. It's just a big dinner party in a secret location that you go to for fun.

The Calgary events have been a touch disorganized, mostly at the table leader level though. When you're going to a secret location, it's good if the group leader is from Calgary and has been on a Ctrain before. Or can read a map... Fortunately enough people in our group figured things out for our 'leaders' and got us to the event and set up in more or less the right place.

Both years we've gone without knowing anyone else and then made great friends with the people at the tables beside us. It probably helps that both years we ended up with extra wine that needed sharing...

If you love sipping lattes and looking at the peace bridge, this is the event for you! Just think, you get to buy clothes and furniture that you don't plan to use more than once a year! And you get to laugh at your jealous friends who didn't get in! It's the best!

Isn't it in a public place? What prevents people from "crashing"?

There are fences around the parameter and security people. If you found out the location and showed up dressed in white with the other stuff you need (table and chairs etc) then you could likely crash it fairly easily. But even when you're boarding the bus/Ctrain most guests don't know the final location, so it would be fairly hard.

Just saw a horde of people gathering in the Westbrook Mall WalMart parking lot for this year's event.

The pretentiousness was palatable even from a distance.
