Malaysia Jet missing-Officials conclude crash in Indian ocean/all lives presumed lost
http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/malaysi...oard-1.2564616
Quote:
Two Canadians are among 227 passengers and 12 crew members on board a Malaysia Airlines jet that has lost contact with air traffic controllers, an airline official said.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we are deeply saddened this morning with the news on MH370," said Malaysia Airlines CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya, reading from a statement several hours after the plane disappeared from radar screens. "Malaysia Airlines confirms that flight MH370 had lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2:40 a.m. today."
The flight was en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. The B777-200 aircraft left Kuala Lumpur at 12:41 a.m. local time and was expected to land at 6:30 a.m. in the Chinese capital the same day.

Extremely strange when an airliner has problems 2 hours into a 6 hour flight.

There's unconfirmed rumor that the plane landed somewhere in China.
http://www.nationmultimedia.com/nati...-30228717.html
But it is unusual that the plane would lost all contact at cruising altitude.

By reading that link, I think there is a translation issue, and they are using the term landing where they should be using crashed.

CTV just reported that a faint signal from the flight transponder was discovered in the waters off of Vietnam. I'm paraphrasing what Lisa LaFlamme said on the telecast.

I was just in Malaysia for Chinese new year visiting my family. We even flew almost an identical route to Narita using Malaysian airlines 777. Can't help but to wonder if that was the same plane.

The photo of the arrivals board with the flight listed as delayed makes me absolutely sick to my stomach. It's hard to even look at the rest of the gallery on CNN because you see photos of the family members looking for information on the flight and realizing what has happened.

Malaysian plane crashed off Vietnam coast - state media
http://sg.news.yahoo.com/malaysian-p...--finance.html
Quote:
A Malaysia Airlines flight carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew crashed into the sea 153 miles off the coast of Vietnam's Tho Chu island on Saturday, according to a Vietnamese navy officer quoted by state media.
"At the moment there are no Vietnamese navy boats in that area so we have to ask boats from Phu Quoc island to be prepared for rescue," Admiral Ngo Van Phat told the website of Tuoi Tre news.

I sincerely hope there are survivors, this is terrible. I saw the stories where people arrive at Beijing airport to pick up their friends and family and escorted away by security in tears.
Are the chances of survival better for a plane's passengers and crew since they crashed into water?

Ditching a plane is never good, but there's too many variables to answer that question. I would say land is always the better option.

I would think that if by some way they survived the crash and were able to use the seat as a floatation device they may actually have a slight chance.
I doubt it though, I don't know how cold the waters are, or I'm sure sharks and other predator types might have gotten the poor souls

Considering there was no mayday I'll be surprised if there are any survivors, especially with the slow locating of the wreckage.

Have you ever been on an inner tube behind a boat and wiped out at like 25mph? Imagine that as a giant plane at like 200mph +. I don't think it makes a difference.

Pretty much, I believe the Hudson ditching is actually one of a very few successful ditchings in history. And so soon after take off low speed and altitude was in that one's favour.
