For Nirvana in and of itself, I would much rather listen to In Utero very loudly. However the Howlin' Wolf cover may
be my favorite live cover of all time. Right up there with DMB and Warren Haynes' cover of Cortez The Killer at the Central Park Concert.

Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon: Courtney Love ‘Might Be Mentally Ill’ + Billy Corgan ‘Is a Crybaby’

http://loudwire.com/sonic-youth-kim-...rgan-cry-baby/

Gordon had this to say, “Courtney asked us for advice about her ‘secret affair’ with Billy Corgan. I thought, ‘Ewwww,’ at even the mention of Billy Corgan, whom nobody liked because he was such a crybaby, and Smashing Pumpkins took themselves way too seriously and were in no way punk rock.” While saying this about Love’s attraction to Cobain, “Uh-oh, train wreck coming.”

Billy Corgan is a crybaby, and since I was listening to this album the other day, these lyrics are awesome

He may be a crybaby but I've been listening to Mellon Collie in the car this week and man it still kicks ass!

I don't remember the Pumpkins trying to be punk rock?

They may have used the term "alternative" around that time. Not punk as a sound, but an attitude.

It was kind of hard for people to figure out where to put them. I recall when they were a fairly new band, they were being covered in metal magazines. Then when "grunge/alternative" gained popularity, they were sort thrown into that category by people who care about that sort of thing. Kim Gordon's view on what is punk goes back to days when it was a lifestyle more than being just music.

I always tend to think of them as a metal band with a bit of goth edge. I definitely think they were unique compared to other bands at the time and I actually like their older stuff better now than I did when it was new. I know that is probably a minority view these days.

Honestly, a lot of rock stars are narcissistic jerks. As a Nirvana fan, I read practically everything I could about Kurt Cobain and he also strikes me as being similar to Billy Corgan in a lot of ways. He was very judgmental of others and critical of other musicians that he saw as rivals. He maybe didn't have the inflated ego, but he didn't mind taking other people down notches as well.
