I hate the "Well it's not as bad as..." argument. That's not the point and completely detracts from the argument. "Was the action harmful or potentially harmful to the animal?" is the only question that needs to be asked.

Deer, moose, caribou etc are good swimmers.

I've seen deer swimming between the Gulf Islands in BC.

But chasing one it a boat surely frightened the #### out of the animal that typically doesn't have contact with humans. Jumping on it's back even more so.

I don't pretend to know what the moose can and can't handle compared to livestock animals, but I'm always a believer in letting wild animals be wild. Leave them alone, that is all.

Honestly, this was funny. I wouldn't have done it and I would have discouraged my friends from doing it, but it is still funny albeit a pretty big ####### move.

Of all the cruel things people do to animals, this doesn't even register. Just overly sensitive Internet warriors getting all excited over nothing. The moose wasn't harmed. Have you ever seen a horse being broken (we ride those, remember?)? It's much more dramatic and seemingly stressful for the animal. How about the Stampede? Steer roping? Bull riding? How many of you guys are going to get drunk and cheer those on in a couple of weeks?

Would you rather be a steer that gets lassooed multiple times a night all summer long, or this moose that some guy hopped on top of for 30 seconds and then lived out the rest of its life in its mountain paradise? I'm sure the guy hopped off the back of this moose and everybody went on their merry way after. It's not like he killed it for its antlers, which is something many don't seem to have a problem with.
No, if you chase an animal like a moose for more than a couple of minutes, you can do irreparable harm:

https://wildinstincts.wordpress.com/...ture-myopathy/

"Capture myopathy is also known as white muscle disease. When the muscle is used its metabolism changes from using oxygen to using stored energy in the muscle. This leads to a build up of lactic acid which goes into the bloodstream where it changes the pH of the body and affects the heart output. If the heart doesn’t pump correct oxygen to the muscle, the muscle starts to die. Over the next week or so, the product produced by the muscle’s death damages the kidney and affects other organs."
...
"It doesn’t take long for capture myopathy to be a factor, either. At Wild Instincts, any attempted capture of an animal needs to be done in less than 2 minutes. This means lots of planning ahead to make sure we aren’t adding to the stress of animal we’re trying to help; we’re not inadvertently causing the future death of an animal we’re trying to save."

So they may have in fact killed this animal or debilitated it to the point that it will not live as long.

Neither of which would be taking down a healthy adult moose. You can't seriously think that natural predators is the same as chasing an animal with a powerboat?

Barf. As a huge LOTR fan, I hate that movie. Well I hate most of that movie.

Actually I like more parts than I hate, but you get the picture. There are many parts I hate.

Believe it or not. More rednecks per square mile in BC than Alberta.

Absolutely. Outside of the lower mainland and the island, and maybe some parts of the Okanagan, live a bunch of crazy, racist dickheads.

'Moose rider' under investigation after video posted to YouTube

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/britis...tube-1.3122984

Conservation officers believe the incident may have taken place last July on Tuchodi Lakes in Northern Rocky Mountains Provincial Park, although the exact location has yet to be confirmed.

I wasn't making an argument; I was providing context.

I don't think it's necessary to get all excited about this one-off non-event.

They get a lot bigger than that.
If I shot a 700 lb moose, I would be pretty disappointed.
