I think that's precisely it right there. It IS beyond us, looking in from the outside, which leads me to believe that the Subban camp is making this a very difficult negotiation for the Canadiens. We don't know, but if they're floating astronomical figures then that would help to explain why Montreal is taking this route.
Is Subban worth $7 m? Yes.
Is he worth $8.5 m? Maybe.
Is he worth +$10.0 m.? No.

Subban is a good damn but I do not consider him elite. He is a level below the likes of Guys like Doughty and weber and should be paid as such. Given inflation of salaries 7.5 to 8.0 over 5 would be fair for PK?

agreed.
However, if we look at P. Kane who got 10.5 or whatever, i'd put him in the top 5-8 forwards in the league, who has some deficiencies in his game (ie. Toews is the more complete player).
If a top 5-8 forward in the league is a 10+ million player, why isn't the top 5-8 Dman?
i don't agree with this, but am curious how one would argue against it.

I honestly cant believe its gotten this far. The two sides cant come together at all?
Bergevin does realize that if he screws this up somehow he'd going to get lynched right?

Hmm. So much for handling it like the Preds did Weber.

It's weird how a player of Subban's profile can still be very underrated by a lot of fans. Incredible player. Worth more than Patrick Kane.

I just don't understand how they can throw 5.75 per for three years at a 35 year old Markov but are balking at paying Subban, clearly the driver of that team, what he's worth. There's also the QC penalty, where half the player's salary is gone immediately, that needs to be accounted for, regardless if it's fair to the Habs.
They've totally botched this.

Every single one of them is taller than PK except Shattenkirk (the next best defencemen) and Hickey (who is the same height). Big = Good

McDonagh is a better defensemen than PK. What's funny is the Habs had the two best defensemen out of the draft, and they gave one away for an overpaid and done Gomez. Now they are playing chicken with Subban.

I think Subban is one of the biggest gamebreakers in the league. He's very underrated by people who wish he played "the white way". 8.5 or 9 million would be fair.

When Subban wins two Stanley Cups and a Conn Smythe trophy we'll talk. Until then, Kane is easily worth more.

Pretty sure Kane didn't win them by himself. Montreal was two different teams in the playoffs with Subban on and off the ice.

Subban carries his team as much as any player in the league though.
Stanley Cups are a team award (I never bought into using it as a gage for judging individual players, otherwise Chris Dingman > Jarome Iginla). The Conn Smythe is a direct result of making it to the Cup... again, nothing you can hold against Subban.
Not that I am saying he is worth more than Kane, but if given the same opportunity as Kane, I think it is possible that they could be in the same class.

Darren Pang has a somewhat notorious YouTube moment where he says PK needs to 'learn to play the game the white way I mean the right way'. It's all rather Freudian.
And to the guy who doesn't think Subban is elite... Child please.

Additionally, if the Habs this year had made it and won the Cup, Subban would have won the Conn Smythe by a hysterical margin.
