Subban arbitration UPDATE: Signs 8 year/72 million deal
I haven't seen any discussion of this. I believe the hearing is scheduled for today at 9ET, just under 15 minutes from now, and we haven't heard anything in terms of further negotiations.
Whats going on here?

According to Elliotte Friedman of Hockey Night in Canada, Subban seeks an $8.5 million award, while the Habs are countering at one year, $5.25 million.

Tidbit from Bob:
@TSNBobMcKenzie
Negotiated settlement between PK/MTL can occur any time before arb ruling (within 48 hrs of hearing) handed down. Otherwise, it's arb award.

I'm thinking he gets close to what he is asking for. He is worth it IMO based on what other top defensemen are getting these days.

I don't think MTL is going to do too well today if that is their argument.
Either way though, I can't see MTL winning this. They should have signed him long term. Huge loss for them regardless of what happens at this point.

Montreal went full on stupid with these negotiations, now its gonna bite em in the rear if they dont get a deal done before arbitration.
Would love to see PK in the flaming C in couple of years.

An extension can still be agreed to before the arbiter's ruling.

I think his point was that the logic used to draft kevin marshall or taylor ellington ahead of subban was flawed

But Montreal is still going to go into that room and tell PK all of the reasons that they think he's awful.
Arbitration destroys player/team relationships.
I think PK is a free agent in 2016.

Montreal completely bothched these negotiations. Subban will get big money and probably term right up to his UFA year. Another star player that will exit Canada for a big US club.

I don't know, aren't the leafs interested? lol
Just had to say that because there's something in the media about the leafs being interested in every player and coach even.
I think Subban gets paid but still leaves in a couple years. If the habs know that he won't be there long term though, they can still trade him and get a boat load for him if they had to trade him

Why they would play hardball with him is beyond me, he's asking for 8 which I think is actually a home-town discount. Sign him 8x8 and reap the benefits of having one of the most dynamic defensemen in the league in his prime. Game-breakers are few and far between, its rare to see a defenseman that can be a game-breaker on a nightly basis. PK is that D-man.

Well, no. If the "whole draft thing" really was a crapshoot, then there would be no consistency whatsoever between where players are selected and their level of success, and that is just not the case.
Subban is one of the exceptions.

Hard to say whether or not Montreal botched negotiations without knowing what Subban's end game is. Though his agent is denying it, there has been a lot of speculation that Subban wants to be the highest paid defenceman in the league. Given he can't get the kind of cheat years that previous CBA contracts enjoy, that puts his long-term contract demand into the $10-11 million+ AAV range. Subban's ask in this arbitration hearing is in line with that, because what he gets would become the baseline for the negotiation on that long-term extension.
Is Subban worth $7-8 million? Yup, and I think Montreal would agree. If Subban's arbitration request was what he wanted long-term, he would have a shiny eight-year contract in his pocket right now.
Is he worth $11 million? That is a tougher call.

Habs should have signed him 2 years ago instead of that 2 year bridge contract they so desperately wanted. A Norris trophy and Conn Smythe worthy performance later, 8 years @ 6mil AAV would look pretty damn good right now.

My guess is Subban gets the $ but not the term. 8m x 3-5 years.

Except it doesn't. If "the whole draft thing" was a crapshoot you'd see as many NHL'ers (and quality NHL'ers) coming out of the 7th round as you do the 1st and that most assuradly isn't the case. In actuality all it shows is that it isn't an exact science.
