Burke strikes me as the type of guy who couldn't give two sh*ts about how old someone is if he deems them to be knowledgable and hard working.
As a 25 year old there are certainly at least a few GMs in this league that I think I could do a better job than. Whether or not that's true is obviously unknown, but it would be tough to do worse than a couple guys that are floating around.

This is actually a pretty cool hiring. It'll be interesting to follow his career path.

The Red Sox really screwed up hiring that Theo Epstein clown as GM at age 28 too, right?

Burke was a pretty young AGM himself - age 31 or 32 - when he was hired by Pat Quinn in Vancouver.

Greg Brady @bradyfan590
Told explicitly Shanahan had hoped to clean house in front office & hire Dubas NEXT summer. Another Eastern team was set to hire him now.

If any franchise needs some forward thinking, it's the Leafs. Could this be the beginning of the moneypuck era?

I don't think we'll ever see anyone go full moneypuck. I would bet almost every team has someone running these types of systems on their players, including the Flames, but I don't know that everyone gives them an AGM title. Although isn't there a guy who is runs the cap-side for the Flames who has been there for a while and is considered an AGM? If not him at least a member of his immediate staff would have some type of analytics system.
I do beleive that a cap neccessitates the need for finding players that are more affective on the game than their salary and/or point totals suggest, but there are too many variables in the game to nail it down to a complete science IMO, like it is in baseball.

Not Edmonton. Remember when they asked the public to help them put an analytics model together? Their moneypuck strategy is to get the public to do it for free! Something special!

Right. Not to mention their scouting staff over at The Hockey News.

People are making too big of a deal about this hiring. It's not like he's the first guy in the NHL that will use advance stats. Most teams will have someone with advanced stats understanding.

From what I've seen this is a Shanahan hire. Nonis is now officially a lame duck.
Here in Calgary Treliving was given the honour of announcing the AGM hirings, no matter how much input he had. I'm not saying Treliving didn't have the say, just that if he didn't he still looked like the boss.

Uh, from the Flames Hockey Operations site
Quote:
As Director of Video and Statistical Analysis, Chris Snow is responsible for the complete and comprehensive planning, implementation and oversight of the club’s video and statistical data mining programs including designing, developing and implementing a proprietary data base of hockey information for use by the club. In addition, he will integrate the data-based video system PUCKS into the team’s coaching, player preparation, scouting and planning processes. Snow spent four seasons as Director of Hockey Operations for the Minnesota Wild. His responsibilities included analyzing team rosters and cap commitments for the purpose of strategic roster planning, preparing for contract negotiations and arbitration, assisting in day-to-day hockey administration and CBA interpretation, and coordinating the team’s summer development camp. Prior to entering the hockey business, Snow was a staff writer for the Boston Globe, where he worked as the Boston Red Sox beat writer. A graduate of Syracuse University, he has also worked for the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

I think it has more to do with keeping analytics in their place.
It's a tool to be used, not the end all and be all.

Has no problem with analytics, but it's not the only tool you use when ranking players. You can't rely solely on math in hockey, it's just too variable.
