Edmonton, who was rewarded for their liberal vote, was awarded capital city status and the U of A and remains a mostly liberal/socialist jurisdiction, supported by government infrastructure.
Calgary and Edmonton are nothing alike, if not in geography, then certainly in political ideology and these differences date back more than 100 years.
Calgary was supposed to get the University, but through some back-handed political dealings it went to Strathcona - technically a different city at the time. Calgary was quite pissed off.

Or so I heard.

Yup.

They made the same deal in Saskatchewan at the same time: Regina became the capital, Saskatoon got the university. Only Saskatchewan didn't renege on the deal the way Alberta did.

As things turned out, Calgary didn't get a university of its own until the 1960s. Just one of many ways Edmonton has given us the shaft over the years.

Both provinces had two major cities, and it was assumed the university and the capital would be split between the two major cities in each province. However the sleazy Edmonton politicians got the agreement to be less specific - use the north and south sides of the Saskatchwan River as the dividing line. In Saskatchewan the university is on the north bank, and the capital is in Regina. Here, Rutherford used the lack of specificity to put the capital in Edmonton on the north bank, and the university in the "city" of Strathcona on the south bank.😡

I was talking to some greaser fans at work today. Some of them are kind of worried that they may take a step backwards this year.
And they are so happy that Leon is signed....even if it was for so much.

Winnipeg is better. If you'd said Regina, yeah.

Do you base your city rankings on amount of Canadian Tires? Interesting scale, somewhat biased though.
