Where's all those people who told us what a terrible idea it is to spend money on a bullpen?

Because that is the only problem facing this team right now.

can't expect the bullpen to be perfect. They had to come in in the 4th inning.
Starters are the problem right now.

Liriano on Saturday 5 innings
Sanchez on Sunday 1 inning
Estrada on Monday 7 innings
Latos on Tuesday 4 innings
Stroman on Wednesday 3 innings

The bullpen has pitched 25 innings in the last 5 games and given up 8 runs, that's not bad.

They are ranked 21/30 in ERA to start the year. That's not great, but the offense is ranked 23/30 and based on team allocation that is terrible.

Other high-priced bullpens like Giants, Rangers, Mariners, Cardinals, even the A's (who i think have a pretty good bullpen), are all ranked below the Jays.

If your team spent 80% of its money on starters, and they all suck at the beginning of the season, do you start blaming the crap offence?

The bullpen has been pretty terrible this year, but look at who's MIA right now. Happ and Sanchez (still can't believe they let Sanchez come back too soon), Stro left with tightness last night, no Tulo or JD.

I guess I'm a blind optimist, but get those guys back, hopefully the pen gets their act together and things aren't looking so bad.

The bullpen is pretty much like everything else on this team. Not great nor terrible overall, but it seems to have really bad timing. Hitting is down, but it's really down when guys are in scoring position. Pitching is down, but it's really down in key situations.

Hard to blame the bullpen last night in my opinion. Jays score 6 runs in the first two innings, but the game is handed to the bullpen with only a 1 run lead. This game is really on Stroman's start in my opinion.

No it's not the only problem at all, but it's the only problem that could be seen clear as day before this season started and has consistently been a problem. They refused to fix this problem at all, and if it had of been addressed, we'd still not be a great team, but we'd still have a change to turn the season around now that the bats are coming around. We'd be a couple games under .500 instead of 10.

The Giants threw a lot of $ at the same problem, and may have ended up worse off.

The bullpen has blown 8 saves

Osuna (3), Biagini (2), Grilli (1) account for 6 of them.

Those three were going to be the back end of the bullpen no matter what, and I don't think spending more money would have changed that. Especially with Osuna and Biagini. Can't really blame Rogers/Shatkins for these guys, who were very reliable last season, for not doing their jobs well enough when past history has shown them to be quite reliable.

They hang onto close out 4 of those and this team is just 13-15 with terrible hitting and two injured starters so far this season.

Can't blame them on Osuna and Biagini, but you sure can on Grilli. He was pretty bad last year, blew multiple leads late in game, and was bailed out multiple other times by the D. And even if you disagree with that assessment on Grilli, you can't go a 162 major league game season with three quality arms in your pen. Last year when we actually addressed the bullpen, we had Cecil, Benoit, Lirianio (on spot duty), Grilli, Osuna, Biagini, and Feldman. Compare that to what we started with this year. We cheaped out took a couple flyers on Smith and Howell.

Yeah, Grilli was scary down the stretch last year. Picking up his option was a no brainer though I think. It's like I said before, it's too bad he was the one with the option instead of Benoit who I much rather would have had come back.

So naturally the Jays pick off their scrap pile for help.

Yeah, they had to pick up his option, but he can't be there only 8th inning option. He has no control.

Smith and Howell were good bets. 3 million a piece, where a guy like Cecil got under 8 million for four years. That's crazy talk.

Chapman/Jensen/Melancon got over 15 million each! That's Jose Bautista or Edwin Encarnacion.

Feldman? The pitcher who was so good he was left off of the playoff roster and was very poor down the stretch?

Smith has been really good this year. Not sure why you're complaining about him (other than they didn't pay enough)

Jays picked up reliever Neil Ramirez off of waivers from the Giants.

13.06 ERA this year, sounds like a solid pickup.

On Sportsnet today they were talking about Happ and how nobody is talking about him or updating us on his injury. That scares me.

How much longer is Sparkman out for?

Such a piss off not even getting a look at him at the MLB level before he got hurt. Especially after the Jays nailed their rule 5 draft pick last year.
