The presale was for Amex card users. I was sent a direct link, and ou needed to pay with an Amex card.

I'm too lazy to look myself but the Ticketmaster page will say when each presale starts and ends. Sometimes the Amex presale stops the night before the general public sale. For other events some tickets are reserved for Amex cardholders and doesn't seem to expire at all.

As the OP mentioned you need an Amex to participate in the Amex presale, it isn't just a code.
