So I tried the place out this afternoon for lunch. I liked it.

Food was good and service was fast. The restaurant itself was well lit with quality furniture and modern decor. They also had plug ins and USB ports everywhere (first I've seen at a restaurant).

Lunch for two came to $50 total with only sodas to drink. I recommend the place for anyone that's not turned off by the tipping. The servers actually seemed more relaxed and genuine. We were asked like 5 times if everything was good and if we enjoyed it haha

Yes, yes, its all well and good while they're all on hightened alert, wait until the complacency creeps in, then we'll really see how well it works.

Did they satisfy your insane cravings for Ranch dressing without staring at you like you were some sort of crazy person?

I ate lunch there this week. My opinion:

- decor and place was very large inside, I like their new set up from the old Earls and it's bright and new and nice. We were able to get a reservation which is usually an enormous pain in the ass downtown during lunch and can be annoying. The old Earls wouldn't take reso's at that location, so I was happy about that.

- prices were fair. Not high, not low, fair.

- menu looked pretty good.

- pretty loud because it's so open and we were very close to people around us... sometimes hard to hear my friend but I'm also virtually deaf so take that for what it's worth.

- service was poor. Took awhile to get someone to visit, when they did we only got 1 of the 2 drinks ordered so my friend sipped water. I mocked him which was fun. Server took about literally 20 minutes to take our order and we had to wrangle her down. Getting the bill was a chore.

^^ I would say to the service though that our server was extremely nice, and apologetic and she just looked absolutely swamped, running around. Not sure if it's a staffing issue because they just opened or she had too many tables and the management needs to get the kinks out on a healthy balance, I dunno.

Overall, definitely would go back and give it another shot. She looked like she was trying not being lazy... just too busy. Food was great. Seemed alright. Didn't really pay attention to the tip thing... was a non-factor.

Question for those in the know at Earls. My kids have a friend who is bussing at Earls part time this summer and he says that they do not receive any amount whatsoever for tip outs. Is this The policy at Earls?

Things may have changed since I worked at Earls last (6 years ago), but a percentage of the tips we as bartenders and servers had to pay back went to the hostesses and bussers.

Which location? Depends entirely on the GM but they should be getting a share. A very small share ($0.50 an hour average maybe), but still a share

Do any of you tip the pizza delivery guy 16%?
I simply will not eat at Earls again.

Yes...

...at least 16%... an extra $5 to not have to go pick up food is well worth it!

What does Earls have to do with pizza delivery?

Wouldn't it make more sense to compare tipping at Earls to tipping at, oh I don't know, any other restaurant in Canada?

Not entirely sure but it would be either the Dalhousie location or the one on 16 Ave by SAIT. More likely the SAIT location based on where he lives.

Depends if they charge a delivery fee or not.

Earls restaurant on Stephen Avenue is going back to the old way of doing things.

Six months after the Earls.67 location abandoned regular tipping in favour of a mandatory 16-per-cent hospitality charge, the company says the experiment has come to an end.

Mo Jessa, the president of Earls Restaurants, says the company tested the fee as a way to even out the hourly disparity between front- and back-end staff.

Not quite the Earls story but here is why tipping made sense in the states but not as much here. In states with a high minimum wage differential tipping a greater % of the bill total makes sense.
