Chris Sale must be hated by team mates. They sure don't like giving him any run support.

Eric Thames has been hot here too. Maybe he can become a thinner left handed Cecil Fielder. I always enjoy seeing guys who go to different places to play than come back to the major league and have success.

Brewers 1B/OF Eric Thames homered in his fifth consecutive game in Monday’s series opener against the Cubs. It came on a 3-2 breaking ball thrown by starter John Lackey leading off the top of the third inning at Wrigley Field. Thus continues the odyssey of Thames, who went from major league washout to a feared slugger in Korea and carried that power back with him for a second stint in the majors.

Lackey and Cubs pitching coach Chris Bosio are suspicious. Though neither came right out and said it after Monday’s game, both hinted that something might be up with Thames.

In his post-game press conference, Lackey said (via the Chicago Tribune) that Thames’ home run was “kinda one of those things that makes you scratch your head.” Lackey seemingly very intentionally winked at the reporter who asked him the question.

Bosio appeared on the Mully and Hanley show and was asked about Starling Marte‘s recent suspension after testing positive for Nandrolone. Chris Cwik of Yahoo Sports provides the transcript:

"Well, the bottom line is [Thames] has hit the ball and we gotta figure out a way to get around [it]. All that other stuff, I’ll let other people worry about. But he’s doing stuff that I haven’t seen done for a long time.

You start thinking about Ken Griffey Jr., Manny Ramirez when he went to the Dodgers, Barry Bonds … You’re talking about some of the greatest players to ever play this game. So, yeah, it’s probably a ‘head-scratcher’ because nobody knows who this guy is. And when he was here before, his body has changed. But, like I said, I’ll leave that to everyone else and we’re just gonna try to worry about how to pitch him better and get him out."

Madison Baumgarner is on the 10 day D/L after hurting his shoulder in a dirt bike accident. I'm sure the team was happy to hear that.

Rosenthal reporting he's expected to miss 6-8 weeks.

Surgery on his throwing shoulder. 6-8 weeks sounds optimistic. That seems like a silly thing for a pro athlete to be doing in season.

The Nat's Turner went 4-for-5 tonight, hit for the cycle, and had 7 RBI.

Unreal.

How about Thames smashing his 11th dinger already. Insane.

Sad to say, I'm still waiting for him to test positive for something. He just looks so different now physically.

If I'm just a pessimist and he's not on anything and has just matured physically then I'll eat some crow and give him all the credit in the world.

Pretty cool. Gift Ngoepe becomes the first African-born player to appear (and hit!) in an MLB game.

Rendon of the Nats 6 for 6. 3 HR. 10 RBI

I heard Thames has had his second 'random' drug test.

Manny Machado not happy with getting thrown at (behind him) by Chris Sale apparently.

Bundy throwing at Betts yesterday did nothing to end this total nonsense going on between the Red Sox and the Orioles. I completely agree with Machado that pitchers throwing at players is ridiculous. One of these days a player is going to get hit in this face and his career will be over, or he will be dead, or he will have a debilitating condition because of it.

It is easily the stupidest part of this dumb unwritten code in baseball.

I sort of feel like Buck Showalter seems to be the source of the problem in a lot of this stuff involving the Orioles.

I grew up pretty close to Boston, and spent quite a bit of time there when I was younger because my uncle lived on the outskirts in Belmont. Like some current and former major league players are indicating, in my opinion that city has a dirty little secret they don't like to admit (the whole New England area for that matter). Spend a couple of weeks there outside the tourist district and you'll know exactly what these players are talking about.

That said, what occurred in Boston is terrible and there's no excuses for it, but why are the Orioles always involved in this with Jones usually in the center of it. Baltimore and Jones seems to have problems everywhere they go. Time to clean up their own backyard as well.

Gausmans interview after the game was anything but the typical type of responses. Called the ump bush league more than once.

I remember a Baseball reporter named Rod Beaton IIRC in the 90's (used to be a regular guest on Dan Russel's sportstalk). One time he made mention that Boston and Milwaukee were the two toughest places for an African American player to play and be successful. It was something to do around Mo Vaughn being in an altercation at a club, and Gary Sheffield going to San Diego and finding his game.

I like to think that things have improved a lot over the past 25 years. That said, even if 1 in 200 is a complete knucklehead...that's still a lot of people.
