We don't have an NHL center who will be under the age of 37 when we are competitive again. I don't count Zary or Sharky as centers.
We also don't have a first line winger on the team.
I think people are really underestimating how bad this team is. Conroy certainly has a huge job in front of him, and no retool is going to fix this quickly.
|
Why don't you count Zary as a center? He was drafted as one and just started playing it recently in his first NHL season?

4-13. Not sure how to take that.
They blew it up, traded the unsigned pending UFAs
This isn’t the team going forward. You know that, right?
Smart enough to know when they’re tanking, as well

Well obviously they will try to improve in the offseason, but it will likely get worse before it gets better. Markstrom may be traded as well in the off season.
Players don't tank. This is who we are, an inconsistent team with not much high end talent currently.

You think that players don’t tank and that was a full effort?
Um… You see Miromanov catch the puck and hike it like a football?
That was high satire, my friend

Next year is the year we HAVE to be bad.If we finish outside top 10 pick we lose it.

Players have ups and downs, and teams have ups and downs, but they don't intentionally throw games, which is what ‘tank’ means in that context.
At this point in a lost season, they're playing to keep their lineup spots next year. They know there will be plenty of turnover. Half a dozen players on this year's roster could be in the AHL come October.
About the only players who are really secure are those with long-term contracts too big to bury: Huberdeau, Kadri, and Weegar. Those three players were not the problem tonight.

4 games left. I actually want to see them lose out at this point. In the reverse standings, they're only 1-2 points behind Ottawa, Montreal, and Arizona for a top 5 pick. May as well see this thing through.
Gonna be hard to lose to Anaheim, but they've shown in the past that it can be done. The back to back should help with that.
It is absolutely imperative that they lose to Arizona on Sunday. Forces them ahead of us in the standings. Big -4 point game.
Then they play Vancouver. Even if they were playing a strong game, I wouldn't give them much of a chance based on the talent differences. That one should be easy.
Then the last game against San Jose. Nearly impossible to out tank that group, so I fully expect a win.
Just lose out down the stretch boys. Finish the job.

We could be headed for an Arizona style of bottoming out. The most dangerous aspect of what’s coming is the patience of the ticket buyers. Last time we stunk this terribly for a couple of years, they covered thousands of seats with tarps.

I'm ready to be patient. Mediocrity has gotten the team nowhere. In this scenario we still aren't good enough but instead we get higher draft picks *shrugs shoulders*

Just 10 years after winning a cup and in a much better economic environment
I hope things have changed but it’s still the most dangerous part of this

Yeah, fair enough. I think they shouldn't have an issue if they make tickets more affordable. Get people hooked before raising the prices with the new building.

If Pospisil had scored when he hit the post the Flames could’ve pulled this one off as they had the Kings on their heels at that point. As in all the recent games, finishing chances seems to be the biggest weakness. I think the coaches have the players prepared, the players still look engaged, but no one (other than Kuzmenko, maybe Kadri, maybe Zary) has the confidence to make an elite move to buy space/time/surprise for a high danger shot. Hopefully with a clean slate at the beginning of next season guys like Mangiapane and Huberdeau can refind their offensive forms and the confidence becomes contagious. Relying on Weegar and Coleman to repeat their career seasons isn’t a recipe for success. If Miromanov and Coronato can take the next step this team doesn’t necessarily have to be worse than this year. I’m looking forward to this years draft but sincerely hope the Flames aren’t heading into a decade of darkness like Buffalo, Ottawa, Columbus, etc.

The NHL, at its best, is a game of inches and percentages.
The team (knowing the season is over) taking even 5% off the gas, means they will lose more than they should.
The vets don't want to get hurt going into off season and even the rookies are playing out the string.
You don't even have to actively tank to tank, they just don't need to play even 80% to ensure a loss.
I can't blame and them. I wouldn't either. Burn the tape, enjoy the off season and see what comes September!

Flames actually look like a contender team. Luckily they can't score. So, at this moment, they're doing just an OK job tanking. They're not as good as the Habs or any other teams below them.

The most dangerous part is if the rebuild doesn't work out, and then they have to rebuild again and that rebuild also doesn't work out, so then try for a third time...
