Well what's he going to tell someone in the media from Philly? I hate the Flyers and they suck? I thought no it's just Johnny being nice.

Well when I think of potential "career Flames" on our roster, I don't think of Gaudreau. It's pretty likely the max we see of him is the remainder of this contract.

If the flames win a cup during his contract I think he stays. If the play mediocre hockey during his contract I see him leaving.

Johnny is in Philly to promote his golf tournament. He clearly has strong ties to the area. The Flames are even one of the listed sponsors, sponsoring the putting contest.

I have no problem with him saying he'd love to play in his home town some day.

I hope his golf tournament is a big success.

What would be even more fun is if CP banded together to be one of the sponsors at next year's tourney!

Can I ask us as a community to put a lid on these types of discussions until 2021? He's under contract for 5 more years, so unless the team sours on him overnight, he's not going anywhere. If I have to read about people worrying that he might sign elsewhere for his next contract for the next 4 years, it's going to be painful, and I doubt I'm the only one.

Moving on...

Johnny will come to love Calgary over the next five years. And he will not want to leave. And if he wants to leave for Philadelphia at the end of it still, then we will all take him to COP and put him on the summer bobsled for some family fun to convince him otherwise.

I really wanted the Flames to push for 8 years on Johnny because I don't see him staying past this next contract. Even in interviews he has referred to the "next 6 years"

If the Flames do something special, get a new building etc then it is possible Johnny stays longer I am not betting on it though

Hey. I only posted the story as noteworthy. That's what we're here for Flames news and stories. There hasn't been much overreacting here but imagine the grief we would be giving Oiler fans if McDavid said it would be sweet to be a Leaf.

Of all the different types of threads and discussions, the ones I like the least are where people try and discuss/analyze/assume the personal thoughts of other individuals who they have never met or discussed the current topic with.

Let's talk about Johnny the Flame, and leave personal assumptions out of it until they are directly relevant (as you said - 5 years from now)

It's not him "just being nice" IMO. It's the truth. Of course it is. Why wouldn't he think it would be sweet to be a Flyer? It was his favorite team growing up.

I'm fine with it.

There's nothing with someone saying they want to play in their hometown. It'd be disingenuous not to, if that's what you honestly believe. I think people get too butthurt in general over stuff like that.

Yup, I dislike getting into the head of players, either for on ice stuff, or off ice stuff. Especially when they've said nothing about it.

Other examples: Brodie's poor play is because he didn't trust Wideman. Gio would resent Iginla (or vice versa).

Look at how many times a local player from Toronto has said it would be his dream to play for the Leafs. But then when that player becomes a UFA they never come here.

I think players like the idea, but it probably adds a lot of pressure and stress playing for your hometown. Much easier to stay where you are familiar.
