Default Is the Saddledome used for anything during downtime?

With the pro teams all done for a long time and Calgary being dropped from most concert tour circuits I was curious if they bring in anything to keep things running, even if they're not typical arena events?

Tradeshows? Hockey?

I know you used to be able to rent out the Dome ice, but I had heard they stopped doing that for some reason.

You'd think with the ice shortage in this city and the unique experience of playing in an NHL arena, that if they had two or three straight weeks of nothing booked they could charge quite more than city rinks and books solid from morning until night.

The cost to keep the building cool for ice makes that definitely not worth it.

I've seen during the stampede they have sheep hurding competitions in there.

I've heard its the satellite location when Chicken-On-The-Way's basement is over-capacity.

I think someone already may have mentioned activities involving riding large mammals that make vigorous bucking movements.

The answer can simply be found looking at the Saddledome website and the events calendar....... but any excuse to start a thread I guess.

Just looked at the calendar. Pretty bone dry except for stampede week.

I could have sworn like 5-10 years ago the Saddledome was said to be one of the most used arenas in North America. Sure doesn't look like that anymore.

They charged 10k to do 90 minutes of ice and called it the Big League Experience.

I can't imagine the 'Dome was ever as busy as an arena in a major American city or Toronto. They have basketball teams and get every musical act. Even before the Saddledome was considered too shabby for the biggest names, we still got skipped.

Back in 2004 our team paid 350. 10 grand? Nobody is going to pay that. If that number is true that is ridiculous.

It probably depends on how you measure that. If you count all events, including sports, it is likely booked for a greater number of events per year than a lot of similar buildings in similar-sized cities.

Between the Flames, Hitmen, and Roughnecks, the Saddledome is booked for about 100 events per year, give or take a few depending on how many playoff games there are.

Add in a couple dozen concerts every year, and the building is being used about 1 out of every 3 nights a year. Of course, because the teams' seasons are played primarily from mid-September to the end of April, there's much heavier usage during those months than the summer.

It's nowhere near as busy as buildings like the ACC, MSG, or Staples Center, but it's comparable to arenas in similar-sized cities.

All three cities and arenas are of similar size.

At one point they were only renting out the saddle dome for 10k for the big league experience. I have seen community groups get access to it , have even payed with them, but am unsure what they paid.

However when we called in 2014 it was 10k for the big league experience.

In places like Vancouver, it's $2500 for 2 hours. I know this is fact because we paid it and hosted an all star game for al league out there.

The Big League Experience is a specific event the Saddledome will put on for hockey leagues, it's not just a block of ice time.

Beer Leagues sometimes do it for their all star game. You get an anthem singer, Beasly comes out and calls your game, it's actually pretty neat.

Yah in the lockout my Company got a "big league experience" because they have a box at the dome.

Was decent, but certainly not worth 10k.

Now, this might just be the price for minor hockey but it is $6000. Which has the anthem, Beasley, cameras and jumbotron going. This was for 1 hour of ice time. So it might be the 10k if you get 2 hours.

Now its super expensive. But you also receive 100 Hitmen, Stampeders and Roughneck tickets as well. So you can do it as a fundraiser for your team or sell them at 20 dollars each and it pays for the experience. Though i have no idea where the seats are.
