Didn't Sean Connery turn down the role of Gandulf in the Lord of the Rings movies because he'd never heard of it before?
Yup, or rather 'because he didn't understand it". They offered him a huge chunk of the Box Office take globally too. The fact that LotR did so well despite the fact that he didn't 'get it' prompted him to take another project he was offered that he didn't 'get'. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Wow, just can't see Connery doing Gandalf. I think they did just fine with who they had.
Very upset to hear he isn't going to do another movie. I realize he isn't exaclty a spring chicken these days but I think Sean Connery will be my most missed actor. Starting watching him as James Bond as a kid (Hands down the bast James Bond BTW, NO contest at all IMO) and have loved numerous movies of his since. The Last Crusade being amongst my favourite.
The retirement is too fun quote was when he was asked about Indy 4. I think he just read the script laughed at how incredible stupid Lucas has become. Looked in horror that Spielberg was so hung ho and then Sean went back to Bahamas.

Beyond his Bond films, my two favorites are In the Name of the Rose, and The Man Who Would Be King. Two great and relatively obscure (compared to many of the blockbusters that he was in) films.

I don't get it. What wasn't there to understand?

Connery stated in interviews for the film (included on the DVD release) that he was offered a role in The Lord of the Rings series, declining it due to "not understanding the script." CNN reported that the actor was offered up to 15% of the worldwide box office receipts to play Gandalf, which had he accepted, could have earned him as much as $400 million for the trilogy.[17] After the series went on to become a huge hit, Connery decided to accept the lead role in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, despite not "understanding" it either. In July 2005, it was reported that he had decided to retire from film-making, following disillusionment with the "idiots now in Hollywood" and the turmoil making the 2003 film.[18][dead link]
