Its a decent roster but being that close to the cap is a death wish. Didn't the flames have to paly shorthanded for a game because Sutter maxed out the cap back in 07?

That was only because the 10 game injured list didn't apply for the last 10 games of the season. So you couldn't get LITR relief.

Are you sure about the bonus overage? Flames were allowed to spend the entire Smid LTIR room, including on performance bonuses.

As the Leafs are facing a similar issue with their wonder rookies all hitting bonuses a few of their reporters went into the issue:
https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2017...tir-three.html
Quote:
Technically speaking, the Maple Leafs will now be able to spend $86.39MM instead of $73MM. However, as Mirtle points out, this extra space cannot be used to cover rookie bonuses. Six young Maple Leafs currently have bonuses included in their contracts, accounting for an extra $5.75MM total. Seeing as the Maple Leafs only had $1.21MM in cap space at the start of the season, they’re going to be hit with carryover overages for the second straight year.

Quote:
Now, how do bonuses affect this? Simply put, the Leafs cap space next year is lowered by the amount of performance bonuses incurred this year that the Leafs have to pay. From my discussions with the best legal counsel money can buy (Fulemin), we believe interaction between LTIR and bonus overages specified in the CBA only states that LTIR space cannot be used as a buffer for overages. Consequently, when a team uses LTIR and faces performance bonuses, those bonuses turn into overages automatically (Fulemin LLC makes no promises regarding the truth of this interpretation. Use at your own risk.

With Dennis Wideman, Deryk Engelland, Brian Elliott gone, the debate is now between Michael Stone, Chad Johnson and Kris Versteeg so far as UFA's are concerned.
The RFA picture is still blurry, but we can imagine that Sam Bennett, Curtis Lazar, and Micheal Ferland will be back on the roster.
Brett Kulak, Jon Gillies, and David Rittich will probably get a contract in some capacity leaving a debate between:
Kenney Morrison
Linden Vey
Garnet Hathaway
Ryan Culkin
Tyler Wotherspoon,
For me the real interesting question is whether or not Chiasson gets a contract in Calgary. In my minds eye the internal management debate is between giving Chiasson or Versteeg a contract.
how do you think things will shape up before July 1?

Required Qualifying Offers...
NHL- Ferland - $945,000 (one-way)
- Lazar - $874,125/$70,000
- Bennett - $874,125/$70,000
- Chiasson - $840,000 (one-way)
AHL- Culkin - $660,000/$70,000
- Kulak - $660,000/$70,000
- Wotherspoon - $687,500/$125,000
- Hathaway - $715,000/$70,000
- Vey - $735,000/$325,000
- Gillies - $874,125/$70,000
- Morrison - $874,125/$70,000
- Rittich - $874,125/$92,500
It used to be easy to assume that anyone whose QO wasn't ridiculously high would get qualified, but after last year, it's not that easy.
There are no Joe Colbornes this year, so all the NHL guys should get qualified, even if Chiasson might get traded at some future point.
Treliving has spoken highly of both goalies who were in Stockton last year, so they should easily be qualified.
I'm guessing Morrison and Vey don't get qualified.
Hathaway and Kulak have both developed well and will likely get qualified.
I'm unsure about Wotherspoon and Culkin. They seem similar to where Arnold and Agostino were last year and they didn't get qualified. Wotherspoon would likely benefit from going to a new organization, but does he have any trade value? It might be best to just walk away.

After the three obvious RFAs, I would make offers to Stone, Versteeg, Rittich, Gilles, Vey, Hathaway, and Kulak.

I too would choose Versteeg over Chiasson, although I liked both of them here. The way I see it, the roster is shaping up with one wing spot available for the two of 'em:
13 - 23 - UFA
67 - 11 - 36
19 - 93 - 79
x - 77 - 20
25
For the money, I pick Kris... better scorer, better on the PP, more experienced

Versteeg was a great fit on this team, and I really hope we see him back. Great on the PP, we can use him on every line and he was well loved in the room.
Chiasson I do like, and think he could fit well on this team but I just don't see how we make room for him. If it's between him and giving Jankowski a shot (which I think it is) I'm going Jankowski.
Hathaway is another guy that we'll have a hard time fitting this year, but with Stajan and Bouma gone he'll have a permanent home as an amazing 4th liner IMO.
Rittich, Gillies, Lazar, Bennett, and Kulak are all locks to return.
Vey, Kulak, Wotherspoon, Culkin, and Morrison are all worth keeping IMO, but I have a hard time imagining where they'd fit in. Our D is pretty near set for a while, with only options at 5-6 -- and any above mentioned D is going to be in tough taking one of those spots. In forward, it's even tougher.
Stone would be amazing to have back as a #5, but he'd be offering quite a discount to stay here.
