Maybe the timing. I figured it was coming at the end of the year.

Nope, horrible year by any standards. They say coaches are hired to be fired...it's inevitable

It was a surprise to me.

It seems like most time a coach gets fired it is either because "you fire every player" or the GM is deflecting blame. I don't think it is an indictment on Hartley though.

I had a feeling right after exit interviews ... glad I told a buddy at the office about it as he was pretty impressed today!

I am more surprised about the timing. We took a huge step back this year, so not shocked about a change being made.

Thanks Bob, you present yourself as a good man.

Not really. If anyone was listening I said during the season management wasn't happy with the defensive play and that they would think long and hard about firing him. Almost a month after the regular season it appeared that they may have decided to keep him but something must have changed that recently as I don't believe that it would take this amount of time to decide Hartley's fate. Keenan was also late firing and it was because Brent became available. Something changed IMO.

Treliving expressed concerns about special teams play and our poor possession game at the year end press conference, so I had a hunch he might make a move.

There's an ex-NHLer in my hockey pool and he said Hartley was the most hated coach in the league. Strong statement but they were his words not mine.

Surprised? A little.
Shocked? No.
My jaw didn't hit the floor, but it hung lower than its usual position for sure.

I thought for sure he was on a short leash for next year as in he'd be fired if the Flames got off to a bad start. I'm surprised they fired him before the season started, which I'm actually ok with, as it gives the Flames the whole offseason to find a new coach, and hte new coach can work through all of training camp to implement his new system with the players.

Am I glad Hartley's gone? Can't say I'm ecstatic, but I can't really say I'm unhappy about it either. His sticking to vets no matter what stance got real old fast. He screwed over guys like Wotherspoon, Ortio, and Nakladal numerous times just to keep playing some of his struggling vets.

Surprised at the timing, probably because there has been no chatter.

But the defensive system was awful. And the lack of physical play must have been driving Treliving and Burke insane on a nightly basis.

When Treliving made those comments at the end of the season, that pretty much set the table.

I figured he had enough rope to last through the 1/3 point of next season. If things started poorly he would be gone by Christmas.

Again, why is this the standard strategy?

Let's start with the guy we don't really want, and wait until things go bad, then fire him?

It's bizarre.

Excellent article again Bingo. Interesting point on the rebuild going faster than planned. I had always thought that certain players are looking better than expected (or at least sooner than expected) but that didn't necessarily mean the rebuild was going any faster because frankly the team still looked like a bottom feeder on the ice.

I take this firing to mean that BT thinks this team is much better than it showed and that adding a goalie and the right coach means we should raise our expectations. Which is very exciting if he's right!

Exactly

I think once a management team or manager gets into that thinking you're just killing a season for no good reason.

Have the balls to make the call now and move on.

The Flames have too good a core to just waste years for the sake of wasting a season to get rid of a coach.
