I see nothing wrong with Nylander being #1 on the list. He has been ripping up the AHL as a 19 year old. I was actually surprised to not see Mitch Marner a couple spots higher as well. He's just been dominating the OHL this year.

Weird to me though that Poirier isn't on there, he is the Flames best prospect by far in my opinion. Maybe disqualified by having played in the NHL? Even though he hasn't had the best year I think he's almost certainly going to end up in the NHL as a depth player at worst.
2012-14 drafts are not looking great in retrospect after the 1st pick and the prospect pool shows it. Although the book isn't closed, there are a lot of high picks that are looking pretty poor right now, Hunter Smith, taking McDonald over Demko, Klimchuk, Kanzig.... a lot of valuable picks and some calls that are starting to look a bit iffy. Hickey and Gillies are probably the only two value picks although the jury is still out on a few others like Kulak, Culkin and Rafikov if he comes over.
Too bad Gillies was injured and McDonald has had such a bad year, I really saw goaltender as the position we'd see guys take the most steps forward this year with Gillies going pro and McDonald going to the WJCs.
Good news (for prospects anyway) is that the top 10 or so players in this draft look really good this year and the flames will almost for sure be adding one to the group. Also Janko is playing great, and even if he flies the coop the flames will get a bonus 2nd rounder.
|
The Demko/McDonald thing is far from solved. There's a massive difference between the league's they both play in. Demko has crazy looking stats, but he's on a good team and other goalies in that league have even better stats. McDonald isn't having the best year, but he's in tough league for a goalie and on an average at best team.

Kenny Agostino is having a fantastic season. Don't think he will be in the AHL next season.

Neither do I. If he doesn't get a shot in Calgary next year, they better use him in trade because he, like Granlund, has nothing more to learn at the AHL level. He needs a shot to see if he can cut it.

Yes Marner has. But there seems to be a wide difference of opinion on who benefits from whom the most on that line. Dvorak is rated super high by Button so obviously he feels he's one of the best centre prospects, and one of the best prospects around. Then you have Tkachuk who plays a complimentary power forward role.
I've seen some argue that we should question Tkachuk's numbers because he plays with those guys. I've seen some argue that Tkachuk's role on the line is important and undervalued. I've seen guys argue that Marner carries the line (probably Leafs fans .
Does Marner make his line mates way better or does he benefit from them more than he helps them?
I can't really answer that question since I haven't seen any Knights games. But from everything I've read all 3 players on that line are top prospects and probably all elevate each other. Personally from watching Marner at the World Juniors I didn't see a franchise player, top tier prospect. He's that one step down IMO, great prospect. I saw a guy with a lot of individual talent but one that didn't necessarily make his line mates a lot better.
Frankly based on what I've seen and what I know, for the Flames I think I'd rather have Tkachuk than Marner. I'd certainly rather have William Nylander than Marner. I think I'd take Strome over Marner. I think I'd take Provorov and Werenski over Marner too.
Average sized, super skilled, not very physical wingers I almost always rate below potential top line centres and potential top pairing defenders.

We should trade away Bouma and get Agostino up on the third line.

I'm not sold at all on Klimchuk's ability to stay healthy, so I really hope Agostino becomes that Callahan type player we were told about. I'd like something good from the Iggy deal.

We should trade Colborne and let Bouma and Agostino play on the 3rd line together.
Bouma is one of 3 forwards who actually hits people, why are we trading him?

Sure Bouma hits, blocks shots, but every play dies on his stick. Can't play offense which I don't expect as he is a bottom six player but even in our zone he can't make plays to get out other than dump the puck to the other team.

Bouma has been a huge disappointment this year. Was thinking about starting a thread on it. Sure we knew he wasn't going to score 16 goals again but come on. ONE point?? (Empty net), I'm super disappointed so far.

To be fair, there are a number of 1st rounders from last season not on his top 50 list.
Zacha being the most notable.

Sounds like the Flames are really high on Shinkaruk and Jankowski. Pumped Klimchuk tires a fair bit too and Pascal sounded pretty happy about bringing in Pribyl.
The Stockton FW group next season is going to be fascinating to watch. Injecting Pribyl, Mangiapane, Jankowski, Pollock to an already dynamic young group is going to be fun to watch. Sprinkle in Andersson with Kylington, Kulak and Culkin with Seiloff the D depth is pretty stacked.

You didn't see it on the score sheet but Klimchuk was a key player defensively and on the PK for the Heat. Huska praised him in a post-season interview with Haynes too.

Klimchuk has to be the most boring prospect the Flames have. Coaches seem to love him but he doesn't seem to standout in any one dimension. I bet even AC would be hard pressed to put a highlight reel together.

Who cares? The guy commits fully to any role and has no glaring weakness in his game, he could be as boring as a Bouwmeester interview for all I care. But in my live and TV viewings of Klimchuk he was just a very smart player who knows where to be in both ends on the rink, he didn't need to have highlight reel plays to produce and be effective.

Boring is his MO though. When you get drafted and get compared to Steve Larmer, you bet your butt boring but very effective is what you should be expecting. I love players like Larmer, nothing flashy bit one of the most effective players around.
