5 THINGS - FLAMES @ HURRICANES
Calgary finishes out this six-game road trip with a matinee in Raleigh
The 'Canes have lost five straight - but four of those defeats have come in overtime.
The latest setback was against the red-hot Bruins in Boston Friday, where they fell 3-2 in extra time. Boston set a new NHL record by winning their 12th straight home game to start a season.
Stefan Noesen and Jesper Kotkaniemi staked Carolina out to a 2-0 lead after the first period but David Krejci scored once in the second and again in the third before David Pastrnak ended things 3:19 in OT.
"Right now, it's just we're in one of those where the bounces are certainly going the other way all the time so we're gonna have to just keep digging in," coach Rod Brind'Amour told media after.#
Hurricanes aim to snap 5-game skid as Flames visit
Even when potential areas of concern turn out favorably, the Carolina Hurricanes are in one of those stretches when they can't quite seem to notch the desired result.
They've had troubles producing on power plays and they have growing concerns about goaltending depth. There were encouraging developments on both those fronts this week.
The next step will be actually winning another game. Carolina, which has lost five consecutive games, meets the Calgary Flames on Saturday in Raleigh, N.C.
Hurricanes’ failure to score has become existential crisis as frustration runneth over
The frustration from failing to score, night after night, is clearly bleeding over into other areas, like Brent Burns’ inexplicable backhanded clearing attempt that led to the second goal, and Jordan Staal getting outfought in the high slot for the third. Those things don’t happen when the Hurricanes are rolling.
CP Secret Santa, Don't miss it!!

Anything less than a 4-0 win on my 40th birthday would be a major disappointment.

A boring team going through the motions with no skill. Hope they prove me wrong though.

A win today salvages a road trip. Carolina is a tough out though. The are the Flames with more skill up front.
At some point the flames will have to start addressing this. I think 20 games is enough to see that they need more skill. Can you do it with the current roster and play a different style? Bring up some AHL kids? Or do people have to leave and others come in?
I think the answer might be a mix of all three.

They're not on the same page offensively, for sure. Need some adjustments.
Wouldn't say they're going through the motions though, that's silly.
Boring? Don't watch!

This is a much better team than what they've shown so far this season. I'm confident that they will eventually figure it out because the shooting percentage and save percentage are not near career norms, nor is the point production for some key players. The structure is there, it's just about bearing down on chances offensively, and focusing a little more to make some key saves. I still have no doubt they will be a playoff team, just not sure what to expect beyond that.
Carolina is reeling a little, unable to score lately, but that also makes them desperate. Not sure if it's an ideal opponent or not.
A win today would definitely improve everyone's mood, and it would set themselves up well for upcoming home games to end the trip on a positive note. I know they're probably getting a little tired on this long trip, so here Flames...take my energy!!!

I think shooting percentage is starting to overtake save percentage as of late.

Considering the duration of the trip, and the quality of the teams they played against, if Flames manage to pull a win today, the trip should be considered successful. I believe they would've gotten 7 points out of 12. That's okay in my books.

7 of 12 points on this trip would be a success. I’d probably be happy with 6. It should be two surly teams trying to bust slumps today.
Boys need to step up. Win their battles, manage the puck, and the rest will sort itself out.

Carolina tied for 8th in the East. Does this qualify as another difficult game for the strength of schedule argument?
