Motoring Sub Forum
Hey all - Just wondering if there would be any interest in creating a Motoring sub-forum to cover all things to do with Cars, Trucks, Motorcycles, Hotrods, Advice, etc? One thing I've noticed is that automotive threads seem to be created all the time, whether it be to ask advice, discuss a new model, talk about a race or what not.
I feel like there would be a good demand and support of a motoring type sub-forums as it appears there are many enthusiasts on this board. I think it would allow for many different motoring type discussions to occur between enthusiasts without cluttering up the main OT board.
Anyways, please share your thoughts on this or feel free to tell me to gfy.

Usually we create a subforum when the OT forum gets dominated with a certain kind of thread. There are some motoring threads, but I think an entertainment subforum might be a little higher on the list.
Threads in OT do seem to fall off too quickly now, and out of any major grouping I think entertainment would be the highest # no?

There's nothing quite as entertaining as talking about cars, photon.

I drive a 2000 VW Passat that I've had to pay way too much to repair over the past few years, there's nothing entertaining about that.

A motoring sub forum, could create a focused area where you could discover ways of saving money on your 2000 VW Passat repairs.
I would like a motoring sub forum. People mention Beyond.ca for an automotive related forum, I find over-all Beyond is lacking most of the time, and the maturity of CP would be more advantageous.

Another trend I notice is that when someone bumps one of the existing motoring type threads, there seems to be more people that add to it, with questions or comments, as they see it on the main page. When it slips down off the main page, people don't see it and don't add to it. Where, if we had a subforum, I think it would foster more discussion as it would always be at the top, like the Tech Talk forum.

Usually it doesn't work in a "if you build it they will come" way, subforums have to have a critical mass of traffic otherwise they end up reducing rather than increasing interaction, at least in our experience.
I don't think they have that critical mass yet to justify.
However if we add an Entertainment subforum (for which I think there is a critical mass, I think over half the threads I saw on OT were entertainment related), that will give more first page space to other stuff.
But until the OT is dominated by motoring, I don't think we'll create the subforum for it, that's just our general policy.

I don't think motoring has the type of critical mass necessary for a sub-forum. A decent motoring thread would be fine unless you want to put a sub forum INSIDE the the tech sub forum.
Do we want Calgarypuck to be a slice of Beyond.ca or something?

Or the go-to forum for Calgary related discussion?
RedFlagDeals kind of went through that, it was a deals site for Canada, but the off topic became very popular for people from Toronto to discuss Toronto stuff.

I agree a motoring section might be overkill, but there sure are a lot of car related threads all the time, and there are some really knowledgeable people on here about cars. We need some sort of sticky-like presence that is more than a regular thread, but less than a full blown sub forum.

I think we tried that with tech way back when, and people actually tend to ignore the sticky threads, visually they just filter them out, so that might actually hurt the cause.

Yeah, I'd like to talk about cars more. I think the interest may be there, but it's probably up to the car guys to start new threads instead of sticking to the ongoing-mega-style threads. I'm not saying to do that to clutter up the board or to try to artificially increase the car chat to get a sub-forum; rather, I think there are people like me that would like to talk cars more on here, but we as a like-minded group don't do enough to spark conversation.

My vote goes for a sub forum from the off topic forum, so it's easy to find.

I vote for decluttering the OTF by getting the TV and movie threads into their own forum. And move the MMA thread into the other sports forum, since there is no armpit or crotch sniffing forum for it to go into.

Lol I see that MMA thread all the time and it never dawned on me to move it.
Yeah if people just post the "natural" amount of car threads they want, there'll either be enough to justify a subforum, or there won't be (after the initial rush where it'll look like there's enough).

Leave the MMA thread alone, it's been there so long (pre-other sports), I'd get confused if it was moved.
Yay finally entertainment sub-forum

I can't say I'm a fan but then again I hate change.
What it should do is keep more news and advice threads in the main OT forum.
It should also allow for more variety of threads in the food/entertainment. Instead of having just a bunch of gigantor mega threads, I think it would be nice to see individual Prometheus, Batman, Avengers threads. Although seperate threads should be reduced to movies worthy. I don't think every crappy movie needs its own thread.

Yeah, having one thread for all comic/sci-fi stuff is ok, but being able to keep the general stuff there and then specific major stuff have its own thread is nice.
