Norm!

That's a pretty decent contract, he's getting a pretty small raise though, I think his current hit was in the same area.

Wow, I thought they were done with him. Good value cap hit. Has he pulled a Backlund and bloomed late as well?

I know they don't play the same position but if Berglund is getting that much then the much better player Backlund is likely looking at somewhere around $5 million a year.

I'd say that this deal, alongside Bjustad's deal in Florida (6x4.1M), actually presents a unique opportunity for the Flames and Bennett. We could see Bennett get a 6 year deal in the range of 3-3.5M, which I think would be fantastic. It'd then give us an extremely solid centre base for the next 6 years (assuming Backlund signs something like 8 years, 5m per).

Wish we would have signed Backlund to a deal like this 2 years ago

Yeah, his 3 year deal now seems too short. That's the risk you take with players though. Put up the term to get a cheaper deal, or pay them fairly and risk them being more expensive down the road.

I doubt Bennett signs anything long term. He's going to want a short term bridge.

I rather shorter term contracts than long term gambles. Worst thing is being stuck with a terrible contract you can't get out of. If the player performs they get paid and shorter contracts keep players more motivated imo.

I doubt the Flames want a 6 year deal and highly doubt Bennett wants one either. Two years makes the most sense for both sides and then he can get paid if he deserves it.

3 years actually makes the most sense if they go bridge - have it expire at the same time Brouwer and Frolik come off the books.
