Flames McKenzie: Flames "scanning" goaltending market

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/video/insider-...rental~1064355

By no means it is guaranteed the Flames will get a goaltender by the deadline, but most certainly scanning and looking at the marketplace.

Want to make sure they get an upgrade on what they currently have, but if the acquisition price is prohibitive they will continue with what they got

eh, price is gonna be too high for the bigger name guys and this team is no place to get rid of future assets. Best to run the course with Johnson and Elliott and reasses the goalie situation in the offseason.

I'd be way happier sending this year's first and Elliott to Tampa for Bishop than I would be with Matthew Tkachuk +. He's not had a great year, but he's been good, and maybe he's come down off that 7/49 ask.

I still think Bishop is an elite level goaltender. If we land Bishop, it's a 20 game audition for an extension and I'd be happy with that (assuming the cost isn't huge, which I don't believe it will be - I imagine a 2nd in '17 + Elliott would do it). Bishop is an elite level goalie who has been crushed by circumstance in Tampa this year - but has really fired it up lately.

He's rolling a save percentage of .946 over his last 5 starts...

...in comparison, we've been winning with Elliott while he's posted a save percentage of .890 over his last 5 games. So yeah, Elliott made some key saves in that Nashville game at the end but if we're going into the playoffs banking on a goalie that is playing at a sub-.900 level, I don't like our chances of doing anything.

Burke said on Tim and Sid three days ago that the Flames were likely going forward with what they have in net.

Treliving has shown in the past that he's smart enough not to waste good assets when there's an alternative to doing so. The goalie market will be absolutely wide open this summer and prices will never be lower. Right now is not the right time for a move.

You think Elliot is good for a garbage goal a game? Bishop is worse for that in my opinion. Bishop benefits greatly from his size and positioning, but he isn't the clutch goalie we need.

Bishop is who I am hoping for. I think if we can get him and he gets hot we could go pretty far this season.

No the Fleury unless the Pens make it worth our while

Definitely open to a younger starting goalie like Mrazek as well.

With Parsons really looking good does that make Gillies expendable in a trade if we could get a 3-5 year number 1?

It better be Bishop! I was happy at the draft when supposedly things were close... ended with Elliot, assuming it was at a much cheaper price. I personally think Bishop for whatever it is and he has the floor for a nice payday from CGY off a 20ish game stint. Bishop is a top tier goalie. I will debate that statement all day long as well!

I think we can get Bishop for a 2nd, maybe a conditional first if he re-signs plus one of our goalies.

I'm game.

I think if you put any goalie in Calgary's net, playing how they are currently playing, the CP board would hate them. I just think that pretty much every other goalie lets in the occasional bad goal that some posters think are reserved for Elliott or Hiller, etc. Frankly, I think Elliott is currently playing decent goal. His season numbers are skewed because of his bad start, but over the last few months, he's been no worse than most goalies in the NHL.

For what it's worth, Bishop does not get the start tonight. Vasielvskiy is starting Vs. the Flames.

I was in favour of going for Bishop before, but now his injury history bothers me.

I can't agree with you.

Since January 1st, Elliott has played 13 games. He's boasting a stellar .891 save percentage during that time.

That's not good goaltending, that's bottom of the barrel goaltending. I've posted this stat before, but for goalies have that started at least 20 games, Elliott ranks 44/47 in save percentage. Elliott is not good.

Me too. I can see the Flames picking him up for Elliott only to have him go down with a groin or knee injury in his first start. That leaves Johnson and Gillies or Rittich for the rest of the season.

What is his percentage without the weird Nashville game? He was great against Vancouver.
