Renaud Lavoie @renlavoietva
Ron Hainsey est échangé aux Penguins. En retour d'un choix de deuxième ronde et de Danny Kristo. #lavoiedubé

Wonder if Carolina retained salary here?
They are shallow on D, could have been an opportunity to move Wideman
Edit: Hainsey makes a lot less than I thought

Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
Carolina retains 50 percent of Ron Hainsey salary/cap hit in the trade
Pittsburgh just announced that Daley is out for 6 weeks, Mattaa and Schultz are also out with injuries

I had no idea Hainsey was still in the league. Gives some hope on Wideman.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

Elliotte Friedman called this yesterday in his 30 thoughts.

10. I think Pittsburgh was in on Michael Stone, but may have needed time for cap reasons. You know who makes a ton of sense for them? Ron Hainsey. Jim Rutherford knows him well. Moving Stone was a signal Coyotes GM John Chayka is ready to go after collecting intel.

I read Flames trade for Hainsey and was confused.
I prefer Stone to Hainsey.

Rutherford: Okay, Brad. We lost Daley to an injury. So, I guess we'll pull the trigger on that deal for Wideman. I just can't retain salary, but I'll give you a 2nd instead of a 3rd.
Brad: Yes. Let me just fill out the paperwork and send it to you... done! Sign it and submit it to the league and it's done!
Rutherford: I see it. Okay, let me just... hang on I've got a call on the other line.
Francis: Jim! Mario just told me you guys lost Daley for a few weeks. Would you like Hainsey?
Rutherford: I was just in the process of acquiring Wideman, but, if you're offering anything other than Wideman, I'll take it!
Francis: Okay. Let's start a trade call!
Rutherford: Thanks for calling Ronnie! You've really saved my hide.
Francis: No problem.
NHL Trade Center: Okay, gentlemen, you've got yourselves a deal!
Treliving: Gee this hold music is getting annoying... what's this? Penguins traded the pick they were going to send me for Ron Hainsey?

Cute scenario, Buff, but not entirely plausible. Was just listening to Lavoie on the Fan earlier. He says the Penguins have four defencemen injured and are going to be shopping for at least one more replacement. They think they can repeat as champions this year, but they need to get through the regular season first.
It's conceivable that Pittsburgh will wind up taking on Wideman as well. Even in his current state, he is a better option than putting a traffic cone on the blue line. Especially for Pittsburgh, as a traffic cone is orange and might be mistaken for a dirty rotten Flyer.

But a traffic cone is faster than Wideman.
Oh, and.... cute? Cute?

Looking at it, Hainsey had 14 pts in 50+ games. Logs 22 mins a night. A leader in hits and shot blocks on his team. A big, but slow, shut down D with a left handed shot and cheap (1.4m) cap hit.

I want to see moreee trades! I am glad that we are in the playoff race this year because usually the season becomes boring until July 1st after the trade deadline if your team isn't in the race.

Even with all that salary on LTIR, they still asked for 50% retention on Hainsey's ~425K remaining cap hit. They're either too strapped for cap space to do anything else, or they're gearing up for another acquisition
