Default GAME 17: Argonauts at STAMPEDERS

Game Time: Friday, October 21st @ 7pm
McMahon Stadium
Televised: TSN, ESPN3

Another meaningless game for Calgary Stampeders who already clinched 1st place in the West Division. Toronto Argonauts on the other hand are still trying to qualify for a playoff spot in East. Toronto is in 3rd place with 5-11 record is fighting for playoff spot with 2nd place Hamilton Tigercats. They are 2 points behind the Ticats. One of the team in West (Winnipeg, BC or Edmonton) will take the crossover position in the East because all 3 teams are ahead of every Eastern teams.

OFFENSE:

QB Bo Levi Mitchell played the whole game last week even though the game against Montreal was already out of reach. Not sure if Dickenson will do the same thing again against Toronto even if the game is out of hand.

RB Jerome Messam had a monster game against Toronto a couple of weeks ago rushing for 133 yards and 1 TD. He was actually removed from the game early in the 4th quarter. Rob Cote took over and rushed 7 times for 28 yards. Davaris Daniels and Kamar Jorden also a huge game going over 100 yards in receiving yards and both caught a TD pass vs Argos. Last week both receivers caught for over 60 yards each. R Marquay McDaniel who were kicked out early against Toronto a couple of weeks ago was Mitchell's favorite target vs Montreal last week catching 8 passes for 81 yards.

DEFENSE:

After sacking the Argonauts QB Drew Willy 6 times the last time they played the Argos, they repeated that performance last week sacking Rakeem Cato 5 times. DE Charleston Hughes had 4 sacks in the last two games, Ja'Gared Davis had another sack last week vs Alouettes after having a monster game against the Argonauts(3 sacks) the week before. He also forced a fumble last week. DE Cordarro Law(also 1 fumble recovery) & Derek Wiggan sacked Cato once each while Micah Johnson did it twice.

Dickenson is turning out to be a genius by letting MLB Taylor Reed early this season and replaced him with a rookie Canadian MLB Alex Singleton. Ever since he took over the starting MLB position he's been playing well. He lead the Stamps defense with 5 tackles last week and he forced a fumble and also recovered a fumble.

SPECIAL TEAM:

With returner Roy Finch getting hurt against the Argos, Stamps replaced him with receiver/returner Jamal Nixon. Nixon wasn't impressive but wasn't bad either. Nixon returned a punt 5 times for 38 yards and also returned 3 times on a kickoff for 67 yards. Kicker Rene Paredes missed a couple of field goals last week after going 4 for 4 against the Argos a couple of weeks ago.

GO STAMPS GO!!!!

One thing to play for - most wins in a season is 16 (EDM, 1989).

Lavertu hurt... again.

Last thing we need is for injuries to pile up.

Damn another player down. C Pierre Lavertu is hurt. It doesn't look serious on the replay but the way he is moving, it looks serious.

Super Sub Quinn Smith is now dressed as an OLine.

Kind of funny. Stamps put their backup lineman and Jerome Messam had a big gain on tge next play. That's why the OL is so good.

I didn't know coaches can challenge a spot. I thought you can only challenge some penalties, fumble, completion or interceptions.

I hope this quest to become the greatest team of all time doesn't cost the Stamps a Grey Cup.

Jamal Nixon is not a good player. Bad returner and cannot hold onto the ball or catch it.

I am trying to give this guy a little more chances before I call him a bad returner but so far I am feeling the same way as you. He's got the speed but his decision making and catching part is pretty weak right now. I am hoping he is still trying to get used to CFL field.

It was sad to see the stamps struggle to get people in the stands tonight. Posts about free tickets to the game from bars is sad for a team chasing history.

Pretty amazing. 14 wins in a row, and 15-1-1. Face what is probably the worst team in the league next week to wrap up a 16-1-1 season with a record 33 points and 15 wins in a row.

Here I thought this would be an off year for the Stamps after losing Cornish, Rogers, Fuller, Simpson, Raymond and changing not only their head coach but their defensive coordinator.

Kudos to Hufnagel, Dickenson, BLM and Claybrooks. Very impressive.

The pessimist in me though, well....4 straight weeks of racking up injuries in games against total muffins for football teams, followed by two off weeks before hosting a much better football team like BC or Winnipeg in what will likely be god awful weather has me cringing inside.

I've seen a TON of unbelievably good football teams in the last 25 years of being a Stamp fan, but this one takes the cake. I've also seen a ton of unbelievably good Stampeder football teams choke hard in the last 25 years.

Really hope this isn't one of them.

For as good as the Flutie-Garcia teams were, we don't have near enough Grey Cup victories from that era. It won't matter if we don't win the Grey Cup.
