Dolan is just an investor in the Oak View Group, which was founded by Tim Leiweke (former President & CEO of both AEG & MLSE) and Irving Azoff (former CEO of Ticketmaster).

It looks like they have a lot of sports & entertainment heavy hitters involved. Their "Arena Alliance" already has 22 buildings signed on, including 14 current NHL arenas:

The NYC metro area is huge and it's not like a new arena to serve that part of Long Island is going to have problems booking events or take events away from MSG.
Also, MSG Networks is the Islanders' regional broadcaster, so they already have a stake in the team's success.
