Default Unsigned draft pick rights status

List assumes that the Flames make all necessary bonafide offers necesscary to retain rights for maximum length of time. Also assumes that any college committed prospects actually attend college.

Rushan Rafikov

Flames rights technically expire June 1, 2017 however the lack of transfer agreement between Russia and the NHL might extend the Flames rights until he is 27 (precedence in Taresenko and Kuznetsov). upd: *has been confirmed to be a defected player so Flames hold rights in perpetuity

2015 draft
Pavel Karnaukhov
5th round pick
Flames rights expire June 1, 2019 as he left major junior before he was 20

Mitchell Mattson
5th round pick
Flames rights expire August 15, 2022 if he does his full 4 years in college because he is playing in the USHL year and committed to college next year. However he could become a free agent as early as June 1, 2020 if he leaves college after his sophomore.

2017 draft
Filip Sveningsson
7th round pick
Flames rights expire June 1, 2021 - drafted out of Europe

When should we start to panic about Hickey?

Why not right now?

But in all seriousness if he isn't signed after this season you can start to hover your hand over the panic button. Especially if the Flames wanted to sign him but he decided to go back to college for the 4th year anyways.

If the Flames can't sign Hickey during the off-season I imagine he will be traded.

Did Karri Ramo have his NHL rights extended?

It seems like he was in Europe for a while before he came to Calgary

Does the fact that Hickey is from Alberta make us panic more or less? Not your typical American College player who goes UFA.

Probably less.

Usually when a college draft prospect goes UFA, it is because they feel they have a better opportunity to break into the NHL elsewhere. Or have just as good opportunity elsewhere but can play closer to home.

Based on the top college UFAs in the past years, most choose to sign close to home. (i.e. players from Northeastern USA sign with Northeastern NHL teams, players from Minnesota tend to sign with the Wild, etc). Therefore it should help the Flames case.

The biggest factor will be how good of a relationship the Flames have with Hickey and do they have him convinced that signing with the Flames is one of his best options for his goal of becoming a NHL player.

So far it sounds like Treliving and company have done a good job building relationships with prospects.

Of note: the deadline of 5pm ET on June 1st has elapsed and no official announcement of a signing; safe to say the Flames did not sign Riley Bruce and he will re enter the 2017 draft.

If he doesn't get picked he will be a free agent.

No surprise as he did not do much to increase his stock.

The thing that worries me the most about the potential failure to sign him is the possibility that, as an Alberta boy, he might forsake the Flames to sign with the Edmonton McDivers.

Philippe Myers

Went undrafted and the Flames had interest in him. Invited to development camp but ultimately Philly gave him a contract and he's blown up since.

Was on the most recent Canada WJU20 team. 6'5" 210lb right shooting Dman who can skate and put up points.

he only had 0.13 ppg in his draft year, then followed that up with 0.71 ppg and 1.00 ppg

Treliving confirmed today that Rafikov is considered a defected player and therefore the Flames will retain his rights in "perpetuity"
