Default Landmark Forum? a cult?

Any experiences here with landmark?

Many Major employers in Vancouver pay for their employees way thru the program, and its rather pushy especially at places like Lululemon.

Long story short the GF(who I planned on keeping around) has finished the first seminar and will not shut-up about it. And is trying to enrol all of our friends and family.

Its Legally a Cult in Germany, France and countless other places

Im afraid...

I am part of the Recliner Seats cult at Landmark Country Hills Cinemas. Does that count?

Honest to god, once you've had recliner seats, you won't be able to sit through a movie in another theater. Throw in some cherry vanilla coca cola and I could basically just live there.

It's a great program which definitely opens your eyes to how you've been living your life, usually unhealthily. But they definitely do the hard sale for every other course, which is a big turn off.

My experience is it's very dangerous. My wife was essentially forced to attend by her previous employer and it was pretty terrifying the amount of mental games they play with the attendees. They basically try to break you down and build you back up, but with the added twist that none of the instructors have any formal training. To me, I hope more employers are taken to task for forcing employees to attend.

I think an easy question to ask for "unhealthy" groups is how easy it is to leave if you're not comfortable. Ask anyone who has attended what happens if they try to leave. They definitely make it as difficult as possible including public shaming in front of the group.

If anyone claims that 'breaking you down and building you back up' is a positive thing you should either run or punch them in the face.

"We're going to destroy everything that was you that you developed over an entire lifetime of education, information and experience and we'll rebuild it into what we think would be best. Over the weekend!"

Well, it is the motto or process of basic training for most armed forces. But it isn't over the weekend.

What about the Naval Reserve? The 17th line of defense between the Mississippi National Guard and the League of Women Voters?

And theres a lot to be said about that as well, but at least with Armed Forces they're training you how to fit in to their system while you're in it. Not some half-assed pseudo-corporate 'Life Philosophy' BS.

They're not trying to re-program you like a robot for the rest of your life.

Or maybe they are, and thats a problem too. People should not let other people program them like a VCR.

Even the military has changed over time.

Recliner seats have ruined regular theatres for me, wouldn't pay money to go to a normal theatre

There are other resources available that give the same results without them asking you to become their sales force.

I would stay away. The chairs have so much room and are soft and recline. This is so much worse then the ones at Cineplex where you get to sit almost on top of the people on either side of you and fight for an armrest.

This debate keeps flipping between recliner seats and bootcamp cult, and now I'm not sure which is which and whether I need to sign my friends up for the chairs or the classes.

Interesting, sounds like you've altered your tone a bit from 2014.

If you take a step back, do you honestly think this made a drastic positive change in your life? Are you still involved with them?

Where does the pressure to recruit non-landmarkers come from, is there a financial incentive or is it purely just a urge to "spread the good news"?

Apparently on the first or second day you're supposed to call a friend / old relative you don't get along with or who have had a falling out with and talk to them, as part of the 'building you up again' process. Not sure if there is financial incentive, but there's incentive to gain respect and 'move up the pyramid' from being a lowly volunteer to some other title.

This is what I've gathered from it - have a coworker that is spinning it on some of us, so I had to do a bit of research.

A friend was in Landmark for a year or so after a rough divorce. I looked into it so I could mock him for joining a cult. Turns out it's based on some fairly legit if unoriginal self-help principles. Of course the money and recruiting part is unscrupulous, but that doesn't make it a cult. Seems closer to Dale Carnegie than Scientology.

My friend did say it was a great place to meet women. They outnumber the men, and his vulnerable disclosures about his divorce seemed to attract them like a magnet.
