There is no guarantee the Flames would have taken the same player with that pick, in fact it's very unlikely they would have.
For all you know they would have taken Ruzicka with that pick if they still had it.
And we still got Ruzicka! So we totally didn't need that 2nd round pick! ;-)
Of course we will never know who the Flames would have taken at 47th overall and revisionist historians will pick the best prospect between 47-67 and claim "We could have taken HIM".
But the only way to really run my experiment is to compare to the exact player. So that's who I'll follow and keep you guys updated on!
Alex Frick'n Formenton!

To his benefit tonight and not the sum of his performance he had a couple good solid chances. Secondly, he powered through to help the Stajan goal. That line was almost our best line. And our best at the end of the second.
Man, can he ever skate. It's such a shame he doesn't have half the hands that he has of his legs.
Wasn't that the concern going into the draft that he didn't have top end skills? He was a solid 2-way player with high character and some GM's overrate stuff like that which is probably why the Senators reached for him. NHL central scouting had him rated 20th amongst North American skaters which is about right as he probably should have been a 2nd round pick in hindsight which is exactly what the Flames gave up for him. Still only 23 years old and most career bottom 6 forwards are still in the AHL at this stage of his career so the Flames just have to see this guy through.

The issue I have with the deal is you should producing players like that in your own system. If you can't draft and develop a regular intake of 4th line energy players, you have organizational problems.

I like how Lazar is coming along. He has improved significantly over the last 2 months, and he’s generating more and more scoring chances as he goes.
Patience will pay off. The team has clearly, from what we’ve heard from the GM and coaches, identified a good person, and are willing to invest time in correcting his development.
It’s coming along, and he’s not actively hurting the team. Just need to continue to be patient. We’ve seen it time and time again, where patience pays off, so why not just continue down that path? It’s the best path in front of the team and in front of Lazar.

Yes they should be but if they had drafted Lazar with a 2nd rounder instead of trading one for him would you feel better? Because Lazar is young and still cheap this was virtually the same thing IMO

I don't think they trade for a 4th line energy player.
They traded for a guy with off the charts character that they thought they could get righted and back on the path to a fleet footed middle six winger.
The jury is still out, though I think the top of the middle is much less likely.
With that argument, the value of a 2nd round pick historically isn't a huge price to pay if they're right, and not an alarming price to pay if they're wrong.

He has been pretty good the last little while IMO. He is completely snake bitten but brings energy, is a great back checker, and tends to get chances every night.
Wouldn't mind seeing him on that third line.
Bennett - Janko - Lazar
Tell them just to go forecheck and create some havok.

I suppose it's a matter of how much you feel a guy like Klimchuk would be an improvement. He's a guy they spent a 1st round pick on yet they have been reluctant to give him an opportunity.

But that's my point. Trading for Lazar wouldn't have been necessary if Klimchuk, Poirier, Arnold, etc. weren't busts.
