The NHL is like a small town... it thrives on gossip. If a final decision to move the Coyotes to another city for next season has been made, it would've leaked out by now.
Not to say it won't happen, but the deadline is tightening.

Speaking of the MLB and Arizona, but aren't the Diamondbacks also considering relocation? I think I read somewhere recently that the owner put the option on the table, but I am not sure what the issue is or if it is realistic. It was reported that he was apparently in Vancouver a while back to scope out the city, although I can't see that happen. There is no suitable stadium and with the housing crisis, I can't see there being much political support for funding one.

Money. By staying in the northern part of California they still get to claim money from TV deals. They can get a new TV deal when the new stadium is built and ready for them to move in.

Yeah, it's a completely different situation. Lipkin was drafted in 2021 and just finished his 2nd college season, so if he went back for another year, he could have done like Justin Schultz and declared himself a free agent next June 1.
If you have a player in that situation who's willing to sign his ELC, you have to do it even if your hands are tied for other moves.

Didn't the Tropicana just get imploded to make way for the stadium?
Just checked... Not imploded yet. As of Tuesday, it's now closed to begin preparation for the demolition, which is expected for October.

According to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro, Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo has contacted multiple parties, including groups inside and outside the state, to gauge their interest in buying the franchise. He’s seeking an asking price of $1B, $50MM more than the Senators sold for when Michael Andlauer purchased the club last summer.
|
Also, I found this interesting:
Quote:
Unfortunately, Arizona state law dictates that the land auction could occur as late as 240 days after the city’s board of appeals approved the sale, which occurred on March 14. That could punt the Coyotes’ certainty on landing the plot into next season, as late as November 9. That’s a tough pill to swallow for the league, facing mounting pressure from NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh to provide a suitable major league environment for Coyotes players. The auction won’t happen until mid-June at the absolute earliest, as state law also rules that “there must be an auction advertisement in print media for a minimum of 10 weeks before the auction.” That has yet to occur.
|
I don't sense that there is much urgency from the different levels of government to move the process ahead.

$1B is the price for an expansion team... which the Smith group is willing to pay...

I suspect Smith will end up paying around $1 billion, but Meruelo won't get all of it.
It will likely end up making good his losses from running the team, plus a little extra to go away.

Houston or Salt Lake City purchase the coyotes.
Québec City and the other team that didn't purchase the coyotes come into the league in two years as expansion teams.

Quebec City isn’t getting a team. Any expansion into Canada won’t happen anytime soon.

The attendance issues are completely self-inflicted by the A's so they have an excuse to relocate.

Let's assume Coyotes are gonna be moving to Salt Lake. Only way Quebec City is getting a team is after the NHL has teams in Atlanta, Houston, return to Phoenix, and probably Kansas City. Essentially, won't happen until all US markets that may have interest are accommodated first.

Southern Ontario would get a second team before Quebec City did.

San Diego is also looking at finally replacing their ancient arena -- with Avs owner Stan Kroenke as the majority investor in the project. So, they'll likely be throwing their hat in the ring for the next round of expansion too.

Would their end goal be to sell to a local buyer/one committed to keeping the team in Phoenix or just whoever is willing to pay?
