The draft is such a crap shoot anyways, I'd like to grab the guy that will get fans to come to games for the next few years through the rebuild. Whoever that is, but Iginla definitely will

Brett Hull went in the 6th round, which makes me think there were a lot of doubts about his NHL upside. In 1974, Detroit drafted 9th OA. Mark and Marty Howe went 25th and 51st respectively. Detroit didn't pick again until 44th and Marty didn't end up doing a heck of a lot in the NHL.
It's not a situation where the Flames would be going off the board (Mark and Marty Howe), or would be selecting a long shot player on name sake alone.
As a side note, I bet a lot of teams regretted not picking Mark Howe or Brett Hull sooner.
|
Is he though?
I keep seeing him around 15/16 and we are likely picking top 10.
I'd love it if they picked him in the appropriate range, but unless his ranking moves up or our draft position moves down, I don't see them aligning without going off the board.

The long term injury has pushed him down. He's missed a ton of hockey. I figure that's a natural drop in rankings given the circumstance.

Those Cosentino rankings are interesting. There's a few eyebrow raising things in there IMO:
- Silayev reminds him of Zadorov (probably just a size thing?)
- Yakemchuk ranked higher than most other lists (#5)
- Lindstrom's injury maybe pushes him down to the Flames range (#10)
- Iginla listed as a Center?
Outside of Celebrini being #1 and Demidov being in the top 3, there sure doesn't seem to be much consensus on the the rest of the guys slated to go top-13.

Even then I could see Demidov slipping to 5 or later.
The only certainty for me is Celebrini at #1 and after that - the specific order is really hard to predict.
It's going to be an absolute blast of a first round, including because the Flames will be in the thick of all that.

This is true.
I'm predicting that the first round will be marked by at least three ‘I can't believe this guy is still on the board!’s, and five ‘Oh, you @#$&*!^!! I was JUST going to pick him!’s.

I don't think the Flames picking top 10 is a given, 11th or 12th is just as likely IMO based on strength of schedule and the teams that need to overtake the Flames. Tankathon's aggregate ranking has Iginla at #13, and he has been climbing all year.

How many draws has he, in fact, taken, and how many have the full-time centres taken? ‘Almost never’ is not a number.

He's taken 116 face offs
Rockets face off leaders:
1st - 1063
2nd - 986
3rd - 713
4th - 265
5th - 237
Tij - 116

And he is also only around 37% on faceoffs. The Rockets have him listed as a center on their roster, but it sounds like they limit the number of faceoffs he takes.
i wouldn't be surprised if he projects to be a RW at the NHL level.

we've already spent our last two 1sts on wingers "who could play center". How about we just draft a real center?
I know I'm in the minority here, but I honestly hope we don't draft Tij. Another winger is the last thing our prospect pool needs, especially when there's stud defensemen and promising centers to be had in the top 10. Not to speak of the pressure and expectations that would come for him as the son of the greatest player in franchise history.

TIL Ryan Huska was a teammate (and probably line mate) with Iggy in Iggy’s draft year.
Looking at that Kamloops team, damn, how does a guy who goes on to be the best player in the world only finish 7th in team scoring, wild. They must have been stacked or Iggy was just a total unicorn development wise.

That was indeed a stacked team. Their record that year was 52-14-6. Two of the players ahead of Iginla in scoring were Darcy Tucker and Shane Doan.
However, I don't think Huska ever played much on a line with Iginla. Iginla's regular centre was Hnat Domenichelli. The Flames eventually traded for Domenichelli because they thought he would have chemistry with Iginla at the NHL level, too. Oops.
