Default Partial Solar Eclipse - October 23, 2014

Not sure if you guys might be discussing the eclipse in one of the science threads, but I figured it was worthy of it's own thread.

http://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/s...014-october-23

Would welding goggles like these be sufficient protection?
http://www.princessauto.com/pal/en/C...gles/8002530.p

Also worth noting, the next total solar eclipse anywhere near Calgary is on August 21, 2017 in Nebraska.

Next total solar eclipse visible in Calgary won't be until 2044

"When I see a solar eclipse, like the one I went to last year in Hawaii, I think 'Oh no! Is the moon eating the sun?' I don't know. Because I'm a caveman -- that's the way I think."

According to the link it's supposed to be pretty good. 90%.

I don't see the moon in the sky yet and it's supposed to start at 2:45...

When is it going to be at it's peak? Probably somewhere around 3:30 to 4?

Yeah it'll peak around 4.

The moon's there, you just can't see it because it's washed out by the sun.

Yeah it looks like it'll be pretty good, I'm going to try setting up my binoculars as a projector, hopefully I don't melt them.

Just get a piece of paper and poke a hole in it and hold another piece of paper behind it, you'll get a projection of the sun.

I've got some eclipse viewing glasses left over from the Venus transit as well.
