Default Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking 2017 - Round 12 Run Off

Emile Poirier and David Rittich were one vote apart in the
Round 12 Vote

Looks like the Matthew Phillips brethren will the ones to decide the outcome.

Our first run off!

As per usual I won't graduate both as 12th and 13th, loser goes back into the pool against Phillips et al for the 13th spot.

How do you spell Poirier? Easy. R-I-T-T-I-C-H.

Poirier had two terrible seasons. It's good he overcame his off ice issues (hopefully permanently) but I want to see what he can do on the ice before I put him up this high. Rittich for me.

Looks pretty tight again - I wouldn't be opposed to just calling it a tie for 12th and then move on to 14.

Well let's compare good seasons...

I have it as 2 for Poirier and 1 for Rittich

Poirier for me.

I really like Poirier and admire his honesty about his substance abuse issues, but I think you have to give this one to Rittich.

In the world of prospects, I think you have to go with who is trending in the right direction. Rittich put up very good numbers in his first North American pro hockey season.

Poirier has gone from a .76 pts/game, to .48 pts/game, to .39 pts/game in each of his subsequent AHL seasons.

I still think he can turn things around and be a good NHL player, but he's not a player that is trending up. I honestly think that if Poirier's substance abuse story didn't come out, he'd be a lot lower in the rankings.

If he puts everything together, he'll be a great addition to the Flames. He's probably the player I'm most interested in watching in training camp. But its hard to look at his recent results and get excited.

I just find it weird he's getting put above guys like Klimchuk, Phillips and Rittich. People usual seem to use some degree of "prospect trajectory" when ranking these players, but people seem to be overlooking that for Poirier.

I get the reasoning why, but I still find it odd. Especially with Klimchuk still on the board. There are size concerns with Phillips and goalies are a crapshoot, but Klimchuk is your prototypical hockey player. He had a better year than Poirier yet could get ranked a couple spots below him. I don't get it.

There's a difference between close and a tie. I think you keep it open for 24 hours and the most votes wins.

Two very different prospects.

I voted Rittich but I understand the Poirier rationale. I went for the guy who has yet to disappoint.

Poirier's stats have been falling since his rookie season. I hope he can turn it around but he has to prove it for me. Rittich was our best minor league goalie last season so he gets my respect.

I voted for Poirier, and the reason is that his potential is flat out better than every other player left on the board. He has all the tools to be a solid top six winger.

Trajectory, or progression is definitely very important (key, for me personally)

But there are other factors, including upside - and Poirier has that in spades. He has also demonstrated an ability to dominate in the AHL.

So it is easy to imagine him recovering from his issues and getting back to where he was. Add in the upside and it's easy to be excited about the possibilities.

Goalies are goalies - which was the only reason why Parsons wasn't #1 IMO

Great post and I agree with most of it. I voted Poirier but struggled between him, klimchuk Phillips and shinkaruk in the actual poll. I think part of it for me is seeing the success ferland has had after going through his personal issues, and in some ways we saw a similar fall from him when he first joined the AHL and was demoted to the ECHL and then the CHL. There is just so much potential with Poirier but seeing Ferland succeed gives me more hope that a turnaround is likely.

All of the above mentioned have different issues/barriers and I think it's very close. I struggle with goalies personally and would almost prefer they had a separate ranking/poll in general.

I think the fact that we are debating prospects of the quality of Poirier, Klimchuk, Phillips etc this late in the poll is highly indicative of a very strong prospect group.

Agreed. And this is why we could afford to deal future 1sts and 2nds in the Hamonic deal. Because the cupboard isn't bare and won't be bare even without drafting high next draft.

As I argued earlier this offseason Flames are as asset rich as they've ever been in my time of following them. Allows Treliving a lot of flexibility to move futures for now or basically do whatever he wants.

Some negative nellies were worried we were mortgaging the future but the pipeline still looks strong.

I like Poirier and he's probably in good hands but for every example such as Ferland there is probably a Setoguchi.
