Also is it me, or is Rick Westhead probably the most depressing person to be around? Every story he breaks is bad news. Asking him how his day is going makes your day worse I'm guessing.

The ask amount is just posturing.

CTV - Chris EppVerified account @CTVchrisepp
Henderson also says Wideman was "aware that (he) remained unsuspecting and was completely defenceless" and that he "disregarded NHL rules"
CTV - Chris EppVerified account @CTVchrisepp
Henderson says Wideman cost him ten million in lost/future income and earning capacity. #flames have not filed statement of defense yet

My bad I should retract my statement. I didn't realize he had surgery and had all those issues. While it was a bad hit, it feels very normal in the game. I guess for the refs, who wouldn't even expect it and have less protection, it would probably cause way more damage.

Well I will give him props for waiting until the Flame season was over rather than put this dark cloud over the organization in the thick of the playoffs. He's within his rights to sue so it is what it is. Regardless of the outcome it will be nice to eventually put some closure on one of the most bizarre incidents in Flames history.

Curious as to how many of his symptoms were exacerbated by his decision to continue and finish the game and make numerous trips to Toronto for the Wideman hearings.

I would assume the Flames are insured for this sort of thing, but I doubt Wideman would be.

I'm pretty sure players are insured as I believe professional athletes are structured as corporations. I may be wrong in assuming that though.

Why the Flames? Because they are his employer? Shouldn't he be suing the NHL?

Hi guys long time Flames fan here, living in South Carolina, been following the Flames since their days in Atlanta GA (my high school years 1972-1974). I think if the Flames / Wideman can settle out of court quickly that would be the best possible outcome.

It actually seems pretty abnormal in the game, when has that ever happened? It's not like he took a puck to the face here.

He does deserve compensation, but 10 million seems like he is aiming for the jackpot. Anyone with expertise in these type of situations know how he could've came up with this number?

Greaaaaaaat, how long is this gonna go on for? Flames are gonna be hated by the refs forever win or lose. I hope they settle this quickly though so it doesn't drag in to court for an extended period of time. Glad Wideman's contract is over though so we at the very least don't have him in the lineup. Safe to say Wideman's career is also over as no team is touching him.

The loss of 10 million in future earnings seems a little off considering he was retiring.

Maybe, yeah. I can't recall the last time a player was sued for ending someone's career, so why would they purchase insurance for it? Maybe it's an all-encompassing sort of coverage. The only good thing about this sort of suit is that we get a glimpse into the inner-workings of the NHL.

I recall reading how he planned on retiring at the end of the year but have no idea if thats true or not. But, if thats out there, the whole future earning thing comes under fire as its unlikely he would be moving into a higher paying job.
