They say one is enough to cover a large area, but we still bought two and placed them at the corners of the patio. The UV light attracts mosquitos and kills them. It also attracts all kinds of other bugs and moth. When a large moth gets zapped, the sound is atrocious though...

Mosquitoes out here are not that bad at all I find. Then gain, i grew up in Manitoba.
When I was tree planting years ago in Northern Ontario. I learned something from the experienced planters. Eat citrus fruits before venturing outside. Mosquitoes do not like the taste of your blood, and can sense it. They will be less likely to bite you. Mosquitoes also are repulsed by smoke, especially marijuana. They also stay away from the plants. So if you ahve a license to grow weed in your garden, do so.
I thought there were a number of papers that showed mosquitoes are literally useless in their ecosystems and could (and should) be sent to extinction if possible.
Yes, it came across as a troll post but I was actually serious. I would still love to be able to enjoy the mountains without bears. I have a tent trailer and am always annoyed how I have to put my food in my truck overnight for fear a bear will kill me. It's asanine we let super dangerous carnivores wander around our national parks.
I also still believe dogs should be banned within city limits. I hate them so much.
As for the mosquito thing, I've got nothing that can help you. I did use a bug zapper all last summer. We were renovating our house so moved into the garage and spent all spare time outside on the patio. The zapper seemed to attract every bug except for mosquitoes. In that regard, it's worth owning one because it does take care of some other bugs. For mosquitos I light those green coils, but I don't think they do anything.

FYP - I believe in the history of the 4 mountain parks there are only 2 human fatalities due to bears, compare that to Falling off cliffs or hypothermia and we should ban hiking before banning bears. Also you should put your food away to keep yourself safe from Hanta Virus (also more dangerous than bears)

Fair enough. At the end of the day I just find bears scary and wish I didn't have to worry about them in the mountains.

When we go to my brothers campsite we drink every time there is a zap, moths are double. Oh man I wish I could remember anything that happened.
The mosquitoes in Australia are not nearly as annoying as the ones in Canada. Maybe introduce larger spiders?
Ugh...those are banana spiders. We have them here. They're incredibly poisonous/dangerous and they don't have any natural predators here. They're worse than mosquitos.

We have those (geckos) down in Florida. Love them.

Attended a lecture about bats a few months ago and the biologists there said eliminating mosquitos would effect the bat population.
But the discussion just centered on particular species of bats in Florida.
Apparently the mosquito spraying they were doing wasn't even being done at the proper time of day to irradicate the species that carries Zika.
