They were planning on doing experiments in the Florida Keys. As it would be isolated to islands and specifically targeted the Zika mosquitos. A bunch of NIMBYs were trying to kill it with a referendum being done in the November election. Never heard what happened after that
Here is the 538 article, looks like it's going ahead
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features...-florida-vote/
We should kill ticks though before Lyme disease gets here.

That's not quite right
http://www.health.alberta.ca/health-...e-disease.html
20% of the ticks of the species that carries Lyme disease bacteria carry the bacteria.
These species makes up less than 10% of the ticks in Alberta and apparently don't reproduce in Alberta. No cases of Lyme disease are believed to have been acquired within Alberta.

There's a recipe online, blue listerine, beer and Epsom salt. It's supposed to work for two months if you spray your yard with it.

I dunno. U of A says 10-20% of ticks...

Ten to 20 per cent of the ticks now being tested in Alberta are carrying Lyme disease, so anyone bitten has a one in five to one in 10 chance of being exposed, she noted.

I know a guy who just got diagnosed too. It's such a hard diagnosis. He has no idea where he got the tick bit.

I use the phone app to make a high pitched sound that supposedly keeps them away. I think it works a little, but it might just be in my head.

I'M NOT ACTUALLY TRYING TO EXTERMINATE ALL MOSQUITOES. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE. IT WAS AN OLD CP JOKE. READ MY OP. I WANT ADVICE ON BACKYARD MOSQUITO CONTROL.
Seriously, what the hell happened to CP. Doesn't even matter if people don't get jokes, but people don't even read the posts anymore. Just jump on the title and start talking out their ass.
But hey, I guess this thread inadvertently started an interesting discussion, so I suppose I don't need to yell. Still would like some advice on backyard zappers and whatnot, though.

I am all for mass genocide, I mean it is an exhausting activity, nothing compared to soccer but still I am game. Where do I sign up or donate?
Also whisky. I find when I go camping and drink mass quantities of whisky the mosquitoes and black flies tend to leave me alone compared to the people around me.

Beer, eh? Waste perfectly good beer on mosquitoes? Well, if it'll kill them, I suppose they can have one per case if it allows me to enjoy the other 11.

Good old zappers work reasonably well. We've got a couple on the deck and they did the job. Cheap and cheerful. But noisy and they look disgusting after being in use for a while...

Actually if you make a full recipe it takes 3 beers. It makes a large amount. Depends on how big an area you need to cover.
I full bottle blue listerine, 3 beers, 3 cups Epsom salt.

That's a tough sentence to parse though

The Ixodes scapularis, also known as a black-legged or deer tick, is among those commonly found in northern Alberta. Ten to 20 per cent of the ticks now being tested in Alberta are carrying Lyme disease, so anyone bitten has a one in five to one in 10 chance of being exposed, she noted.
|
Is the tick referring to the ixodes or to ticks in general?

The beer I have. Will it look suspicious if I go to Shoppers and just buy listerine and epsom salts? I don't want to end up on some kind of watch list
