that kid is something else. Wow.
but why would Buffalo trade an unconditional pick without making sure he'd actually sign? Seems like a waste of an asset.

And the plot thickens. I still think this whole loophole is stupid.

It is pretty obvious that Vesey wants to go to one team only... (at least at this point).

What else would an agent say, really? He's looking to put his client in the best position, saying "Oh great can't wait to sign tomorrow" wouldn't exactly do that.
I wouldn't be upset or disappointed until August 15th.

Yeah, except there is little to negotiate on an ELC, other than a few of the bonuses. And no doubt he would get top shelf on that front from them, regardless.
So that being the case, what would the benefit of posturing be?

You have to take the agents words with a grain of salt. If he all of sudden signs tomorrow, Preds can potentially say tampering? In the end I think he sings in Buffalo. The darkhorse for me is the Rangers, they always seems to come out of nowhere for these kind of guys. Of course the bright lights of New York don't hurt either.

Well, let's give it some time at least.
Of course it doesn't change his intentions minutes after the trade.
But fly him out on a private jet, give him the sell job, a pool party at the Pegula mansion with his buddy and future line-mate Jack... things can change pretty quick.
You'd all be saying the same thing if Calgary had traded for his rights.

They can afford to. They've had so many picks the last few years and this year, and there's only 50 contract spots. If they think they've got a 50% chance at signing Vesey, it's smart move as the odds of a 3rd turning into a good player are much worse than that.

No, it's a smart move if they actually have a 50% chance at signing Vesey. But if he really has already decided to try free agency, it's a wasted pick even if the team has a 100% chance of signing him in August.

They have four 3rd rounders and are stuffed with prospects already, I think it was a reasonable gamble. A gamble the Flames couldn't afford to make, but the Sabres have been better at acquiring draft picks in their rebuild than the Flames have so they can shrug it off if it doesn't work out.
