Really surprised by how many people here think possible tax evasion is "A OKay".

There's a vast difference between thinking tax evasion is okay and not thinking a guy living in a house should blow the whistle on his landlord.

I don't think doing 160 while swerving in and out of traffic and passing on the shoulder on the number one is "AOK", but I also don't feel it's my responsibility or right to sit on the side of the road getting license plates and calling the cops.

Not reporting is the same as condoning it.

Now that it's in the forums, anybody who reads this thread and doesn't call CRA about it is condoning it.

What are we going to say, that an anonymous poster's landlord might be dodging taxes?

I don't think any of us has enough information to do that. Other than the original poster.

But he does not even know if the guy is or isn't. You don't throw out accusations like that on a hunch. Its like saying, "I got a discount at the pizza place for paying cash, therefore I am reporting the Pizza place to the CRA because I suspect he may not be reporting this sale."

I prefer to carry a wad of cash in my pocket simply because of debit card fraud and being burned by it in the past. Maybe this landlord prefers cash because a bunch of oil field workers have wrote him bad cheques in the past. Cash doesn't bounce. If I was the landlord, and knowing what I know about the credit situation of a large portion of the guys that work up there, I would insist on cash too. These guys make some pretty serious money, but a biiiiiig portion of them have terrible discipline with it. Some of the hardest credit apps I have had to work are 6 figure Fort Mac guys.

C'mon now. The guy is making assumptions that are ridiculous. I have tenants that pay cash and don't bother asking for a receipt. The money still goes to the bank to pay the mortgage. Property taxes are paid. There's no profit involved, so what does the jackass OP think his landlord is doing? It's not like having a revenue property is some kind of underground business. He's not building decks for cash here. It's a piece of property. The owner is on title.

Christ, with all the money involved in maintaining a rental property, the OP should be happy he has a place to live.

If you're looking for the 'under the table special' try chicken on the way next time you're back in Calgary. Best in town!

Are you suggesting he move to the deep south? Hell? Is there a difference?

To the OP: I demand that you post in full any and all illegal activities you have committed in the past, present and possibly future before I am willing to condemn your landlord.

im going to disagree here. if im in traffic and someone blows down crowchild and appears either drunk or driving insanely dangerous i've called the cops before to report them. how would i feel if they wind up hitting someone and their drunk driving? at least if i called i feel like ive done my responsibility. seeing a crime and reporting it should be everyones civic duty.

this thread isnt quite the same level tho.

Other people I work with have stayed there in the past and it's the same situation. The landlord has mentioned the renovations he has had to make to turn it into a legal rental property and also how he gives all the cash to someone 'who takes care of it all for him.' I suspect if I start requesting a receipt one day I will come home from work and find all my stuff missing.

I have strong suspicions that this shady character is not paying any tax on the money I give him. what would be the best thing to do to make sure he is not committing tax fraud?

By committing tax fraud the landlord is causing other, honest people to pay more taxes.
