Do you need a receipt? If so, that's an issue. If not, I'd say leave it be, or move out.

So if I let him know I'm going to do it, it's ok by your standards?

Lol why the hell do you care? The worst people in society are the ones you rat on you to the government.

Nothing sucked more than when I was a kid (about 10-15 years ago) than having to rip out our kitchen in our basement several times because of tattle tales. They'd come in and check it out and make sure we complied with the rules and when they leave we'd put our kitchen back together. Why the heck do people care?

Now I have 2 rental properties and both basement suites are illegal, but thankfully the government doesn't care these days because of the housing crunch. I also pay all my taxes FYI.

My guess is if you're paying him in cash he's probably cutting you a bit of slack on the rent. When you enter into an arrangement like that, I think there's an unspoken agreeement that you won't be a total jerk and rat him out one day.

It's not meant to be a perfect analogy.

Are you bored? How does this negatively effect your life? It seems like you are creating a problem where there isn't one. It's far more likely your life will be worse rather than better if you report him. If you're unhappy living there, just move.

I'd be a little more worried about that, and a little less about Revenue Canada if I were in your shoes.
I am worried about the whole situation and was looking for advice. Instead I get: what if he is j-walking , call the cops! hiiiiiioooooooo!

Well if almost 100% of the posts in this thread have the same tone then you have your advice.

Mind your own business.

I couldn't care less. Good for them if they find a way to screw the government.

Many have tried and many have failed.

I think there's an anonymous tip line for CRA where you can report someone and hope that person gets audited. I talked with someone who works for Revenue Canada, and she told me they get a lot people trying to get back at their cheating partners calling in and reporting potential tax evasions.

Personally, I don't know why you'd want to get involved. If anything happens to the guy, you're out of a place to live. And since there are no paperwork, he can just deny taking any rent from you.

It seemed fine at first but new problems and issues have arisen along the way, so now I'm in the process of seeing what the best next step to take would be.

its simple, if you dont like the guy, or he is a slum lord like you suggest he might be, move. if you want a receipt for some reason then ask for one, he'll say no and you move. but it really just sounds like you are getting a good deal by paying cash under the table and want to report him anyway. if you are happy living there great, if not move. but its not your job to catch tax evaders, I dont see why you care.

Hmm, I guess you can request a receipt for your records, and if he threatens to kick you out, tell him you're reporting him to the CRA.
