Icon23 Canes sign Jaccob Slavin (7 yrs, $5.3 mil AAV)

https://www.nhl.com/hurricanes/news/...on/c-290372786

Quote:
Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Jaccob Slavin on a seven-year contract extension. The contract will begin during the 2018-19 season and carries an average annual value (AAV) of $5.3 million.
Huge raise for a guy coming off an ELC and probably not well known by fans who don't follow the Canes regularly.

Yeah, more than I would have thought, honestly. He is a really good second pairing guy, and his shot numbers over the past few years are almost dead on with the average #2 d-man. Definitely one of the more underrated d-men in the league. But you wouldn't have thought he'd have the leverage to get over $5m on an RFA deal.

Just shows how little I know about who's good in the league nowadays, especially out east.
I mean, I heard his name, but didn't realize he's worth that much.

Ron Francis is quietly going about his business building what appears to be a promising young foundation.

Who? I like to think I know a lot about the NHL in general, but I have never heard of this $35M defenceman. Must be because he plays for Carolina.

Sure $5.3M seems a lot if it was for 3-5 years maybe. But it's 7 years. You ger a very good d-man with plenty of upside signed such that when you might be contending and he's in his prime his cap it is a paltry $5.3M.

You are essentially trading some cap space now (when you can afford it) for cap space latter, when you will need it.

Terrific signing. Only a matter of time until that deal is Josi-level friendly.

It is interesting that the trend for promising, young RFA defensemen on their second contracts is to sign for longer terms than promising, young RFA forwards.

I wonder why that is?

Defensemen are more important overall. They play a larger percentage of the game. They are hard to acquire and hard to replace. I think when you're convinced you've found a good young one you're happy to lock them up for as long as possible.

Also, they take longer to reach peak effectiveness, so you negotiate a longer term to take advantage. A second contract RFA forward is probably entering his post productive years in only 2-3 years, whereas a defenceman probably has more like 4-5 years to get there.

I also think there is less risk in d-men overall.

It seems that sometimes offensive players regress, but decent young d-men are likely a better bet to continue being good.

But that's not based on any hard evidence, just my gut feeling.

Cost controlled long term deal for a desirable position also makes for a great trade chip if needed.

I think this is probably correct.

This young man helped me win a lot of Daily fantasy hockey last season. Guess he probably isn't going to be a good bang for your buck like last year.

This could end up being like the Roman Josi contract (which is currently the best contract in the league).

Still a gamble though.
