I think it has something to do with the growth curve of the positions, and future earning opportunity.

Forwards past the age of 30 don't seem to be able to secure longer term deals in recent years. It seems like any forward over 30 signed as a UFA becomes a regrettable contract very quickly. So if a forward can hit UFA at the age of 27, he still stands a good chance of landing another longer term lucrative contract as opposed to getting to the market at the age of 30.

Whereas defenceman still seem to be able to get a 5-6 year contract even if they are still 30-32 years of age.

Teams may see things this way because even if a defender declines from a top pairing guy to a second pariing guy, they can still give that player significant ice time. Whereas if you have a high paid forward on your third line playing 13 minutes a night at top dollar, that's a touger pill to swallow.

I expect those are going to look like very good value deals over the next couple of years.

While the harmonic and Brodie deals are obviously excellent, if they had been longer (like 7-8 years), they would have had a AAV of greater than $5m. And I bet Calgary wouldn't mind if they had been longer at that price, as they'll likely be paying quite a bit more when those contracts end.

When d-men like Slavin continue progressing, those deals end up as absolute steals. By giving him 7 years, the cap hit is hugely reduced in the later years.

But that's the gamble.

And the Canes with another terrific piece of business locking up another great young defender long-term. If Darling pans out they could have a great season.

Hearing about a signing from Carolina is like hearing about a distant KHL team. Splavenblok HC signs Metten for 36M!

He is a really good young defencemen, and that is going to be a steal of a contract very soon.

I think it is interesting that the Canes entire top 6 are all American. Seems like their US scouting is pretty solid when it comes to drafting D in the middle rounds.

Old reddit thread where someone spelled his name painfully wrong and another poster photoshopped that masterpiece. Buried somewhere in these threads is the picture.

At least that's better than being picked one pick after Kanzig! (from a Flames perspective).

Yeah unless you look further down the list (Duclair).

Fun fact: Who has the most games, goals and points from that draft?
Not so fun fact: Who is the only first rounder with zero NHL games from that draft?

ETA: This is the wrong thread for all this -it was Pesce, not Slavin, who was one pick before Keegan.
