It's incredible that he somehow saucers the puck on that save. I love the overhead shot. Full extension. I have looked before for an HD picture of that so I can hang it on my wall, but no luck. Classic Flames moment.

That was such a fun stretch.

I was on my way to a conference the night of that Detroit game, and was unable to watch it. But I remember being shocked by the highlights and excited to learn more about this young, dazzling new goaltender. The Flames had an abysmal start that year, and Brathwaite's win in Detroit was the first of his season. He went on to win nine of his next 15 in Nov/Dec, registered three shutouts and a 50-save OTL. The 27 December game v. Philadelphia was televised nationally, and it was a rare opportunity to see him out of market and playing against a NHL powerhouse. I felt so bad for him that night as the Flames were ventilated at home.

You moved away from Calgary? If only you mentioned it in every one of your posts.

Not sure how one could 'love' the Roman Turek that played for the Flames outside of that hot start he had the first year where he went 13-0-4-2 in his first 19 starts.. outside of that he was never my favourite goalie.

Re-negotiated his contract when Kiprusoff emerged. For the benefit of the team.

One of the best goalies the Flames ever had, for that reason.

He was still working with them this past World Juniors as well.

That was probably his -15 year?

Once he solidified himself as Kiprusoff's backup (with a good team in front of him for once) and also filled in for an injured Kipper, he put up some incredible numbers too actually.

He had a 2.16 GAA and .927 Spct after coming back from injury in January.

I think if he came back to play another year in 2005-06 the Flames would have been much better off and maybe would have gone deep into the playoffs (they would have had home-ice advantage straight through to the finals don't forget).

Wow.. Was honestly unaware of this that is pretty awesome. Not my favorite goalie in terms of play though, always felt like he should have been much more of a true #1, played basically 500 hockey for us but still that's pretty decent of him considering he lost the starter spot to Kipper.

Good on Freddie. Always love this guy. He was like 4th or 5th goaltender to tend goals for that lowly Flames back then. I can't even remember who else tended for the Flames before they hit the jackpot on Freddie. Goalies were just dropping like flies with the injuries.

So it was the 1998-99 season when they used 6 goaltenders in one season. I believed Ken Wregget was the starting goalie, then JS Giguere was the backup. I can't remember the order now on who played after they lost Wregget & Giguere to injury, Tyler Moss, Andrei Trefilov, Tyrone Garner and Freddie Brathwaite.

I always thought Kipper/Turek would have been a legit top starter-backup team for many years (and would have been great for Kipper).

Name a better backup for Kipper throughout his career. And don't say Cujo.

Very true statement, never had anyone who could take some of the workload of his plate. I think not having a true backup through his prime is what held us back from being elite and Turek could have easily been that for us for sure.
