I agree with those saying it's a good signing by the oilers. Good 200 ft game and can still put up 3rd line production.. If he's not in Florida he probably doesn't get bought out.

They're paying him to play for another team...

Bite your tongue, sir! Olli may not have been the #1 centre we were expecting but he bled for the Flames. He was one of the very few likeable players on those country club Sutter teams.

He's not a bruiser for sure but also not a guy you can just push around. He stood up for the young guys in Florida several times during his tenure which earned him the "A" IMO.

He won't be playing with McDavid, he's a bottom 6er.

This is a no-brainer signing for the Oilers.

The guy is very versatile as he has played all 3 F positions, at times for years in a row. He is very good in the faceoff circle a well as in shootouts.

I think one of the bigger reasons for this though is he knows Pulujarvi quite well and has for years. He owns part of the team JP played for in Finland. He could be a very valuable mentor to get the kid on the right track into the NHL.

I don't like it.

Maybe for 1 year. Otherwise I don't know what hockey games you were watching. Just your average nhl floater. I bleed for the flames too, doesn't mean I have any value on that roster.

Does anyone know what's going on with Florida anyway? They got rid of a bunch of forwards but haven't signed anyone notable as far as I remember.

Barkov by the way was VERY unhappy about losing Jokinen. If I recall correctly, he hits UFA when he's 26. There's your window, Florida, because I don't see him staying if their team building is as flaky as it has been so far.

EDIT: in the Florida lineup thread on Hfboards, this is currently their forward lineup:

Huberdeau - Barkov - Dadonov

Malgin - Trocheck - Vrabta

×××× - Bjusgtad - xxxx

Haley - MacKenzie - Sceviour

^ can't quote you for some reason but...

Where did you hear Barkov was unhappy?

Having followed Florida the reason they cut Jokinen seems to be purely cap related issues. Florida has an internal cap of 65 million.

edit:

I think GM Tallon said Haapala would be their second line LW....

Malgin probably 3C/3W

Good point, but as we can all recall with Dion days bringing in the "whisperer" doesn't always work.

They have 3 years with the kid anyways, and may end up trading him due to a brutal cap situation.

Haapala is, what 5'9, hasn't played a single game in North America in his career, and is expected to play on the second line?

Who's Malgin? What's a Dadonov?

This is a tanking lineup. It's the only conclusion that makes sense to me.

You guys may want to check into his shootout stats after he was the shootout toast of the town all those years ago.

I thought Haapala was ahl bound for sure at least for a year. It's ridiculous that they are even considering him but honestly, he is probably their best option at this point. They are already at their internal cap.

Malgin is a 20 year old who showed a lot of promise last year as a 3C, Dadonov should do well just by playing with Barkov and Huberdeau and probably is a safe bet.

This was a better signing than the Kris Russel deal.

They'll have to get pretty lucky with the unknowns not to drop in the standings. Just a gross-looking group of forwards, much of it KHL-level.
