Conroy expects Foo to push for a spot in the opening night lineup.
The Calgary Flames won the college free agent sweepstakes earlier this month with the signing of Union College star Spencer Foo.
Foo chose Calgary over the Edmonton Oilers, Detroit Red Wings and Vegas Golden Knights, and the Flames are hoping to see him in their lineup this season.
"My expectation for him is to push and make the NHL club," Calgary assistant general manager Craig Conroy told NHL.com. "He's got speed, he's competitive, and he's got skill. The thing I like probably the most about Spencer is about how hard he competes. Does he start in the NHL? That'll be up to him.

Interesting. It sure sounds like management has him as a potential opening night player, and given that gaping hole on the #1 line I have to think Gulutzan gives Foo plenty of time in the preseason to try out there.
Definitely a player I'll be watching very closely during camp, because I honestly have no idea where he ends up. Wouldn't surprise me if one of the 'old guy' RWs are signed to a PTO to light a fire under his butt and/or provide a safety net of sorts.

I really don't see the need for this at all:
Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland/Foo
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Versteeg - Bennett - Brouwer
one of
Stajan - Jankowski - Ferland/Foo/Lazar
or
Ferland - Stajan -Foo/Lazar
Hamilton
No room for an old guy at all. This team needs to get faster not old and slower.

He said PTO, not a guaranteed contract. Also if a player comes in and earns a spot then they're the best player for that spot. Versteeg is a great example

I agree with this. I get why the Flames would be looking at bringing in a proven guy like Jagr, as it's a gamble if they choose to miss out on signing Jagr to bring in an unproven player such as Foo.
With that said, with the potential of Foo along with the youth and extra energy he would most likely bring to the line up, I think they should give him (or another young player such as Porrier) every opportunity to crack this line up this season and aim to stay young and fast

I was hoping this was another video from the AssHandler.
As it so happens, that's actually my video.
