I'd easily replace Gillies in that deal and still do it. We could only hope that Gillies could get to Rannta's level of development, goalies rarely turn into starters. Great deal for us.

It could be just the Rangers trying to the Flames to up their bid.

Although, Hellebuyck didn't exactly win anyone over last season.

Heck, if the rumours are true that Carey Price or Cory Schneider might be available, I hope Tre goes all in for one of those guys. The cost would be higher but goaltending would be solved for the foreseeable future.

Could we extend Johnson to meet the requirement?
Sure you could. But why would he sign if he is going to be exposed?

Were there actually any vindicated rumors or was it just fans spit-balling?

having a bona-fide nhl contract for one.. thats not exactly a guarantee through the off season..chad johnskn had a good stretch for the Flames and Sabres in two seasons but it's not like hes for sure to get another nhl deal...

Nhl contract today for any 31 teams > maybe having one later

If we offered Chad Johnson a 1.9 million x 2 year contract, I think he would accept the risk of being claimed in expansion vs the reward of job security in his home town.

I think their protected list is projected to be:

Nash, Stepan, Kreider, Zuccarello, Miller, Zibanejad, Hayes
Staal, Girardi, McDonagh
Lundqvist

Which would leave
Fast, Grabner, Lindberg
Klein, Paliotta
Raanta
as the most attractive unprotected assets

Yo, analytics guys. How is Klein? Could be a potential partner for TJ on that second pairing.

I would think the Rangers would convince Girardi to waive his NMC or buy him out? I don't see them exposing Klein and keeping Girardi.

Klein is okay analytically on a pretty bad Rangers team (in that respect).

So you can argue they would prefer maybe LV taking Raanta than Klein.

Fast is a good young asset as well. Cannot count him out of LV taking him.

Yeah, the Rangers have a lot of expansion bait. Grabner is another Vegas could realistically take. I could see them keeping Raanta around until the expansion draft is over as a way to hopefully entice Vegas to keeping their paws off of anyone else. But if Vegas does select a skater, the Rangers would then trade Raanta to another team.

That doesn't meet the exposure requirements. They'd have to either sign Fast or Lindberg (or Puempel or Pirri) to a new contract in the next week or leave Hayes unprotected.

Which according to the article the Rangers are in the process of signing one of Fast, Lindberg, or Puempel to an extension, but their agents have taken a hardline stance realizing the Rangers need them to satisfy the expansion requirements. Given the stiff penalties for not meeting the requirements and potentially letting Hayes go for free, they will likely cave to one of those guys.

According to the article they are going to let Pirri go unqualified.

I haven't heard the Rangers being interested in trading him, and if we made a deal pre-expansion we'd probably immediately lose him to Vegas anyway.

Klein is an answer to precisely zero of the problems the Flames have.
