Brooks: Flames & Jets have contacted Rangers with regards to Raanta
not surprising as Treliving's MO is to look at all options. Also looks like Rangers may be leaking this to up the offers they currently have on Raanta (remember when the Rangers supposedly had a 1st for Cam Talbot?)

The Flames and the Jets are believed to be among the clubs who have contacted the Rangers regarding a pre-expansion draft trade for Raanta, but management has not yet committed to dealing him or has not yet received an offer pushing them to that conclusion.

Raanta as the starter, Kipper as the goalie coach....

I wish the Flames could develop goalies like the Rangers. Hopefully, Gilles and Parsons will put us in a position like this.

Kipper did a lot of stuff that would be hard to teach because of his superhuman flexibility.

Maybe give them kulak and a second or third round pick in 2018 for Raanta. Since LV may take Kulak anyways. Winnipeg GM seems conservative, as he will not make this trade. Then we get our goalie and LV will likely pick a veteran off our books like Stagan or Bouma. Too bad their GM is not going to take Brouwer.

Maybe we need a new goalie coach. It looks like that sigalet guy has not done anything since 2014.

They aren't really a goalie development powerhouse. Neither Raanta or Talbot were drafted by them (Raanta via trade two years ago and Talbot was a college FA), and Raanta was already very promising when he went to NY.

They might not be drafting them but it does seem they're doing something right.

Me personally I am not for or against him but let's say it is Raanta and one of Elliott or Johnson I am not even close to convinced our goaltending is fixed
Maybe Raanta is Talbot or maybe he is Lack?

It's true, but we're only going to know if a) we give him that chance or b) we look at the massive amount of intel we as fans aren't privy to.
Personally, if that's the direction Treliving wants to go, I don't know enough about Raanta to disagree.

I'm sure the Flames have had discussions with every team that might have an available goalie.

He played a lot of games as a backup in the last two seasons though. Anyway, Treliving looks at all possibilities. Also, just having the rumour out there helps Treliving in negotiations for other goalies.

Sadly, this is the course you are stuck with when your organization can't develop a legit goaltender....
Who was the last legit starter we developed? Version?

Raanta is eerily similar to what Talbot was prior to his being traded.
Talbot went for a 2nd and a 3rd plus a swap of 7th rounders that saw the Rags move up in that round several spots. I read somewhere that the Rags had a 1st on the table for him though at some point but dropped the ball somehow.
I imagine that 1st was either 15th OA in 2015 from Calgary before the Hamilton trade or 16th OA in 2015 from the Oilers before they made the (lol) Griffin Reinhart trade.
Treliving and the Flames pro scouts were after Jones before he proved himself, they were after Talbot before he proved himself, and they were after Matt Murray before he proved himself. If they believe Raanta is on that type of level as well then who am I to disagree?
I've seen on-line proposals where the Flames give up 16th overall plus a prospect (Rittich?) for 21st overall and Raanta and that doesn't seem like too bad of an idea.

If you look at the young goalies rumored to be available, or the UFA goalies that are still unsigned, or even the veteran goalies rumored to be available, I don't see a single one that doesn't come complete with gigantic question marks.

Makes sense as goalies without question marks are just not usually made available.

Raanta actually has close to 40 games more under his belt than Talbot had when he was made #1. That is like 1-2 seasons for a back-up. He has more than what Martin Jones had as well. Same with Darling, who looks like he is being given a shot. And he was lights out in the SM-Liga as well.
Personally, I think he is ready for a shot and his salary and contract are very reasonable. I like the idea of bringing in a vet as well though to help him through it.
